Tank Stick 4-way/8-way MAME

Is it possible in MAME to configure the X-Arcade tank stick to have both joysticks active in One player mode?
I want to setup my left stick as a 4-way and keep the right stick as 8-way, so I can easily jump between them for playing different types of games.
I seldom play two player so that's not an issue.

and figure out basic controls functions.....
But watch, he'll come back after doing mapping, to say that using an 8-way for 4-way games sucks a dick, I mean a donkey's dick (HAH), and is there some way to fix it, please???
