SNES Super Scope Firing Issue

There is SNES Super Scope support in MAME. You can map the controls and start a game. The first shot you take will properly register where you are aiming. After that, the fire button no longer works. This is true across several games I tried. Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong?

SNES Mouse games appear to function correctly.
