Atari 5200 Graphic Problems
#360589 - 11/24/16 06:30 PM

Hi Guys,

I've been pulling my hair out for far too long trying to get Atari 5200 working properly in MESS (old versions) and MAME. I've watched lots of YouTube videos, and it appears that MAME/MESS is capable of emulating the 5200 well enough. The problem I keep running into, however, can best be compared to screen tearing, though it's baked into the graphics themselves...

I've attached a screen shot. The best way I can describe it, it's like an object gets split in two, horizontally. Then the top piece advances and then the bottom piece follows it.

I've tried so many different MESS/MAME versions, but is always there. What am I missing??

(I've circled the problems in the attached image)

Thanks!

Yeap, there's a lot of bugs with the 5200 emulation. Already well known. Just like when trying to run Pac-Man, you just get a blank screen. Ms. Pac-Man's colors are all wrong, etc

Windows 11 64 bit OS
Intel Core i7-10700
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 6GB

The Atari 800 series has the same issues since the hardware was almost identical. Another graphics issue you can see in your screenshot is the bottom portion of the screen. The image doesn't fill the output area correctly so you can see a black band across the bottom.

Atari 400/800/5200 emulation has become fragile and broken over time due to cpu core rewrites and the driver not being kept maintained. I'm very close to adding the imperfect graphics tag to the driver, but that will likely result only in more complaints about how people need to hit a key to start the emulation (warning screen). What the family of machines needs is a good developer willing to rewrite the driver to account for the progresses made with the core.

Frogger issue was logged already here, for what it is worth:

Pacman boots and plays via software list for me in a400/a800, a5200 machines/versions. The a5200 has some corruption at the top, but plays nonetheless. As far as color issues, I'm not surprised at all since the driver has, as I mentioned before, been neglected for a very long time.

I wonder why I just get a blank screen. I've tried with hlsl enabled & disabled, deleting the cfg, etc, but I still only get a blank screen with Pac-Man

You are using the softlist item and running like: mame a5200 pacman? Is it a black screen but you can hear it still, or does it seem to be sitting there and doing nothing?

Yes, I'm using the softlists. It appears to just sit there & do nothing. The Atari logo comes up, but when it's supposed to switch over to the game, it just shows a blank screen. I don't hear anything after I've tried pressing the start button, or any other buttons
