How to boot Apple 1 sets ? (and other MESS systems)

So I'm trying the MESS side of MAME for the first time in .. 10 years I guess.
I get the black Apple 1 OS boot screen, I switch to partial emulation, play the entire tape (for any game, it doesn't matter), and then nothing happens.
I'm probably missing some kind of commands for this computer, so anyone knows how to boot software on this ?
Also, is there any link or manual detailing how to operate all MESS systems ?
Thanks,

What prompt are you getting? Is it a \ or is it a * or is it a >?

This is where a frontend like QMC2 really shines. When it's hooked up correctly with the system and software template, you'll gain access to a wealth of information.
At the top of QMC2 you can utilize the ProjectMESS, Notes, Software List, and other information. It's even possible to click the name of the Driver in the blue box and you're taken right to the appropriate page in GitHub
https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/master/src/mame/drivers/apple1.cpp
http://www.progettoemma.net/mess/system.php?machine=apple1
Hopefully this gets you started but am unsure if it will resolve your specific issue. Let us know if you're still having trouble

Ok, so I followed instructions in here:
https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/master/src/mame/drivers/apple1.cpp
First I type C000R Then, E000.EFFFR
everything freezes, I press play on the tape (I tried Apple Basic, since it seems I need that loaded before running a game ?)
when it finishes I get the \ cursor again (sometimes I don't get the cursor and I can't do anything else, don't know why)
I type E000R .. and then it freezes there.
No idea how to continue

The instructions say to type C100R, not C000R. Are you sure you're typing in the correct thing?
