- HBMAMEUI - MESSUI - CANAME/NMAMEX/MAME32K/MAME32M, weird Chinese builds mostly based on ancient MAME32 code from 0.62-0.85-era with backported current MAME code (which may be license-violating depending on the situation) - ThunderMAME32UI+, based off (MAME Plus?) 0.160 code with backported current MAME code - CountryMAME, based off MAME Plus 0.106 code with backported current MAME code (I think?)
So really, not a lot?

MESSUI comes in 3 flavours (a) monthly build with all machines (b) monthly build with MESS only (c) bleeding-edge build MESS-only.
Build (b) will no longer be released, as there's no real point any more.
Also, I want to retire MAMEUI as it is missing many essential MAME features. MESSUI build (a) can be used as a replacement, it has everything that MAMEUI has and also has software lists.

the complete version of MESSUI (a) should just be renamed MAMEUI going forward as it's basically just a more feature-complete version of the UI and the MESS name is more or less retired.
(of course, for the version with no arcade systems you could probably ship with the legacy name)

I agree with Haze, I still prefer using MameUI for arcades and MessUI for computer and consoles, separately

How many current-code UI builds are there? Looks like only MESSUI, with original MAMEUI being current but not in the interface features.

The UI builds are dying, this shouldn't really come as a surprise.
There are various reasons for this, it's easy to blame the UI code for being awful, but the UI builds were the option for the 'cool crowd' and MAME is becoming increasingly irrelevant to them as we've really not managed to move past emulating 90s 2D games in a convincing fashion* while the rest of the scene is several generations beyond that.
MAME is doing a decent job for really obscure things, and non-gaming platforms, but people using those have no need for the UI builds and are less likely to create new forks based on them, or maintain the ones that already exist; I dare say a large chunk of the people with a true interest in those things aren't even on Windows so the UI builds are completely irrelevant to them.
I'm not claiming my work is any exception to this either btw, I know for a fact that interest in 'Super Two In One' and 'Mahjong Senpu' will be practically 0, but they needed emulating all the same.
* yes, I know there are cases where we do, but MAME's requirements for such cases are often outrageously high in the eyes of the general public, and compatibility not great. There are playable Wii U emulators, even PS3 to some degree while MAME is trying to impress people with a picture of the original Xbox dashboard, which while an impressive technical feat isn't going to actually be used by anybody as long as it runs at 3fps, especially not those also interested in UI builds, there's no overlap.

One simple question : - Why MAME devs does NOT make/develop official MAME front end ?

the official MAME frontend is the internal one.

You mean an official desktop FE, which would look the same on Linux, Apple OS & Windows (aka Robbbert's full combined build, but multi OS compatible instead)?

What about QMC2? I know a LOT of people hate it because it's not very user-friendly and it lacks in the 'visual' department but at least it's in sync with the current MAME version. And after you learn how to use it, it becomes quite useful. If I were you I would give it a try, because the internal UI question has been raised a couple of times now and the answer remains the same... are you skilled enough to improve it? Because none of the current MAME devs are interested in improving it. In this case, an external help is needed, badly.
