Thanks, some great finds there. Interesting that Universal had a clown as their logo years before Mr. Do was released.

My guess this morning was to blame "Circus Circus":
http://mamedev.emulab.it/undumped/index.php?title=Circus_Circus_(Universal)
... but there seems to be usage that even predates that!

The Universal font is a classic circus font so if they used it from their get-go then it was part of their original branding before they did anything.
