'easiest' would be to get a router that does openvpn and you get your whole network. You could also flash a router to do it with something opensource (tommato, dd-wrt, etc). I know the ASUS router I use with the rmerlin firmware can do client and server.
Next up would be to just use openvpn right on the computer itself and get your routing tables setup correctly. Basically just blow away the normal 'default' route and make the vpn the default route and a special one for your local network.
Probably want to look through the openvpn forums on configuring it correctly. Don't want to accidentally leave your computer without a firewall.
There are are few other free ones out there.
Been meaning to setup a remote into my home network VPN for awhile and openvpn is how I am going to do it.

Cant speak for smit but I would assume he wants to work around something? Maybe he does not trust his ISP or someone else?
For me I want to be able to remote into my network and access my stuff remotely. Dangling a smb share on the internet is a bad idea. I could do something like an ftp server but why not get more and get access to my VMs, file shares, and remote control access to any computer in my house. If you have 1 computer it is 100% useless. If you have 5 it becomes more interesting...

I would assume he wants to torrent something(s) and needs to be anonymous for it. As far as I can tell, OpenVPN alone won't help that at all.
I don't know what will for free.

"Tribler does not protect you against spooks and government agencies. We are a torrent client and aim to protect you against lawyer-based attacks and censorship."

As clear as it needs to be. If you're just that paranoid, I recommend not doing what you're wanting to do. Otherwise it sounds like something really illegal...and then I'd recommend not doing that, either.

Tried it, tweaked various settings .... and got some glacial download speeds.

Yes, just make sure your router make / model is compatible with the software you want to use. (Check tommato, dd-wrt, etc out and see which you like best. One is - or was - a lot friendlier, and the other was more powerful / had more options last I checked).

Right. And that's how it works - but it seems they're trying to develop their own seed community, wherein I assume it wouldn't be like that....
