It is probably locked by the OS. What is on the drive you are capturing?

PHYSICALDRIVE0 is probably the C drive containing the OS. If you look in Disk Management (Diskmgmt.msc) is the target disk labeled Disk 0?
When you connect a drive and Windows asks to fuck with it, make sure you answer NO.

You need an administrator command prompt (right-click the command prompt icon in the start menu and choose "Run as Administrator") to mess with raw disks.
Also, I've never seen a Windows setup where PHYSICALDISK0 isn't the C:\ drive, so be very, *very* careful about which is which.

It's pretty common with SAS setups that PHYSICALDISK0 isn't the C: drive, but I don't know how much it happens with less exotic setups.

Yes def active. Account is administrator. Under XP no option to run as admin.
Yes PHYSICALDRIVE0 is correct, it could be allocated this way, as c drive is on sata connector, and hd is connected via IDE. which may take preference from bios.
But still same problem of cant open file etc etc

Why does the drive have a letter assigned? That is probably the problem. You let Windows assign a drive letter. Windows probably took the liberty of adding pagefile.sys or something to it and now it is locked. Try removing the drive letter, reboot and try again. Oh, and it is the active drive, so your PC most likely used it as a boot disk.

It is a windows system that the drive is from and removing the drive letter made no difference as tried that previously.
Def not the boot disk either as the drive is a system drive from a fruit machine actually. Just bugging the hell out of me why chdman cant access as a drive and comes back with error of cant open file ......
as chdman can be used for backing up any drive the fact of a letter assignment shouldnt really make a difference for reading purpose anyway, or should it???
Retried again using different pc, unmounted the drive etc. Now windows drive is Disk0 and the hd backing up is disk1 but still same problem.
And yes i used PHYSICALDRIVE1

ETA: The original game runs Windows so it's not-OK to try and dump it on a Windows machine, but at least the drive letter doesn't mean it was reformatted.
Use WinHex to get a raw dump of the drive, RAR or 7zip that, and contact MAMEdev.

Arbee its a harddrive from fruit machine, im trying to create a system to be able to backup these drives and rewrite them to either new drives or sdcard system to use in fruit machines. As we know the drives used are now starting to get on a bit and prone to failures, which manufacturers no longer wish to support. If windows is not suitable for creating a backup system then would a linux system be more use for me to create and write these. It will only be used for backup/rewrite of these and video games. Nothing else.
So any help with this system would be most helpful. Thanks

Are there more partitions on the Disk that Windows is running from? I can only see the one with C:. It shows the D: drive as active. It will use that partition to boot from if there is not another active partition.
By the way. Have you ever used WinPE? Maybe it would work from a WinPE disc.

Yes. On Linux, do: dd if=/dev/(whatever the drive is) of=drive_image.bin bs=512 as root.
