Doesn't matter what AMD CPU you go for, the fact is they're only about half as fast per core as the i5 you bought.
MAME needs the fastest per core CPU it can get.
For MAME you made the right choice so relax.
It might be a different story later this year though when they release their new ZEN architecture CPU's which are supposed to be at least 40% faster per core than the current line up, which should put them at least into the same league as the i5/i7 Intel chips and a good budget choice for MAME.
