Some games give me an extended attributes are inconsistent error.

When I try to start certain games such as After Burner II or Mat Mania, I receive the following:

Error 255: The extended attributes are inconsistent.

Anyone know a solution?

Please specify whether this is printed to the command prompt, if it's a fatal error (does MAME exit?), or if it's shown on-screen as opposed to appearing in the command prompt.
