Playing games on Raspberry Pi
#354578 - 05/23/16 09:43 PM

I'd like to try out a Raspberry Pi connected to a CRT TV screen with composite output to play arcade games on it.

Since I don't know anything about that device, is there a step by step manual about all the things that I need to buy, set up and install, so that I have a working emulator on it?

Yeah, don't bother. Performance is abysmal. If you REALLY want to go down that road, wait for the ODroid C2 to get hardware accelerated video on Linux.

Or, go with the C2's Android support and get MAME compiled for Android if you're feeling adventurous.

The C2 has twice the RAM and CPU of a Pi 3 for $5 more.

I have a Pi2 and a Pi3, and I take it with me almost everywhere I go. I travel a lot for work, and stay in a lot of hotels. Looks/works great on an HDMI connection. I am pushing 50, so most of the games I play, are from the golden age. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Dig Dug, Tron etc... all play fine.

Firehawke has to be refering to the newest games, which I could care less about. Any of the classics will work fine. N64/PSX era games work ok on the 3, but still might hickup a little bit, but anything before that, you are fine.

No, he's referring to the newest MAME. I guarantee you that games that have discrete sound, Donkey Kong especially, will have no way in hell at running full speed unless you're using some ancient version (which, if you're running a Pi variant, is 99% likely to be true).
