What is your hardware specs?

You might want to do the usual making sure other softwares are not stealing CPU cycles.

rename your mame.ini and create a fresh one with (mame64 -cc) only inserting your rompath to test with defaulted settings.

Empty the contents of nvram folder.

On an i7 930 at stock clocks I get 100% with 0 frameskip after playing for a few minutes.

I confirm, I'm at 70-80% when the action starts. During attract mode I'm at ~90%. Even if my PC sucks today, I clearly remember I was able to play at fullspeed in the past.

It has slowed down quite a bit - I'm trying to determine when and why at the moment. I'll report when I have something solid.

Ok. I've determined the cause and have a temp solution which isn't something I can commit. Just know that it is being addressed. 0.172 and later show this slowdown to a greater extent than before but it has always existed to a lessor degree.

*EDIT* slowdown is relieved in GIT now and performance has improved a good 5x over 0.173.

Yeah, to my knowledge I've never tried this game before, so I can't speak on past experiences or MAME versions.

I can only confirm the entire stage 1 stays at 100% on my i7 930 which is at stock clocks and defaulted BIOS values at the moment.

Turning the throttle off can give you a better idea as to how it's performing. There's a difference between keeping pace at 100% and being 200+%

we've established there's a genuine issue

logerror calls have become MUCH more costly, even when no logging is being done, which is surprising, and probably an error.

the game was triggering a rather unusually high number of log calls (as it touches the protection an awful lot) but previously they had no real impact on performance, now they do.
