MSHvSF - alternate palettes?
#353407 - 04/23/16 10:10 PM

So I saw this combo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcyjvzpW7L0 and it shows Cyclops and Hulk (among others) in colors that I thought was only available in the PS1 version of the game.

How do I use those colors in the arcade version of the game, as that combo video shown?

How do we know the video isn't of the console version (SS Import or PS1)?

ETA: I'm fairly certain, the console versions did have at least one tell-tale sign. Cyclops' Mega Optic Blast. The consoles split the image and flashed the top and bottom halves for each frame of animation. The arcade version had both for each frame of animation. So, if I'm not mistaken by that statement/observation, then I believe that is a video of a console version.

Edit2: If I'm wrong about that, then someone please correct me.

I have.... the SS Import which uses the RAM cart, but I can't recall if that feature was present.

Not that your question isn't valid.... This is the only thing I can think of, and it probably won't even work. If pressing start doesn't automatically choose the character you're on, then maybe hold it and press any of the other 6 buttons....

looking at videos the energy bar style is different on the PSX version, could be Saturn, but seems a bit weird for anybody to be bothering with the Saturn version these days...

Analyzed it again, cannot be the console versions because the PS version only allows tag-team in a cross-mirror situation (eg. Ryu/Wolverine vs Wolverine/Ryu - every pair is different per fight, eg on 2:03 you had Hulk/Mech Zangief vs Cyclops/Akuma) as well as different stun bar, while the Saturn version was only available in Japan (2:03 on video clearly says Akuma, international name) and the character icons are below the health bar in that version, too.

Therefore, it could only be the arcade version.

It's a combo video, and those usually stick to specific game versions that can be abused for flashyness. So it might be the Saturn version w/RAM cart.

Except the Saturn version was exclusive to Japan. Akuma / Gouki....

Good thing you mentioned that...

Something strange at 2:00. It shows Cyclops doing an air-dash.... There are only 3 characters that have that. Cyclops isn't one of them... Or, shouldn't be.

According to ArtLine's followup post, it's not the Saturn version, though I will say that you must not be into fighting games.

Any purist will tell you that for home ports of Capcom's CPS2 fighting games, the Saturn with a RAM cartridge, especially the extended RAM cartridge, was way better than the PS1. Hell, if you look at the wiki page for the extended RAM cartridge, pretty much all of the games that use it are either fighting games or Neo Geo ports. With the extended RAM cartridge, you'd be rocking upwards of twice the RAM as what the PS1 had, and both Capcom and SNK used that extra RAM to full effect.

yeah, back in the day they were definitely better ports, but since the originals have been emulated it's quite easy to see things that were cut / limitations, so I really doubt anybody is going out of their way to run those versions today unless they own the hardware.

It's actually kinda funny, you even see it with some things you might expect to be arcade perfect, eg. the NeoCD port of Art of Fighting 3 actually ditches the zooming and uses lower resolution graphics at all times.
