If you want a guess, I'd say it's more of an easy way (along with the screws... perhaps that thing is a safety, in case the screws shear?) to separate the blade from the hilt.

If you know of, or could post an example of this - that might help me to understand. But I don't think this is the case....
It's actually a full tang sword.
I may have to work something out to where, when that button is slid, that it brings in 2 tabs that would go into narrow slits on a sheath (behind those 2 high-heeled shaped parts). This would unlock, and make it so the sword can be removed.
That's the only thing I can think of that would make sense.
I know they don't go into that much detail, but fwiw, there's this....

Friend of mine says that it's a safety lock to lock the blade in place. Or, if it's a spring-assist knife, then it's the trigger for the spring mechanism.
