Mame: "Unable to create the Direct3d Device"
#349301 - 01/16/16 09:27 AM

If anyone is familiar with how to solve this particular problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am trying to run a slightly older version of mame (151) on Windows 7 64 bit in Direct3d mode.

My computer's specs are listed at the bottom of this post.

I used to have this same version of MAME working perfectly in Direct3d mode back when I had Windows 10 installed, but I recently downgraded from Windows 10 back to Windows 7 after discovering that many of my old games were no longer compatible (SecuRom no longer supported, Compatibility modes, etc), overall stability and a host of other issues led me back to 7.

Now I'm back on 7 64 bit. If I run the roms in directdraw mode Mame works, -- but from my experience -- direct draw mode kind of sucks. It's not as smooth as it used to be when everything was working in direct3d mode.

The version of DirectX I have now is 11. Mame d3d didn't work with just a straight graphic card driver install. Then somebody online told me that there is certain functionality from prior versions of direct X that DirectX 11 doesn't come with, and that I could install and old version of direct X as well (I picked 9.0c) and it would work in harmony with DirectX 11. I tried installing that old version of DirectX, and that didn't help me. Same error -- unable to create the Direct3d device.

So I know my card is capable of doing mame with direct3d, I have witnessed it before. it's just something about the way something is configured, or something else that is present in Windows 7, and not Windows 10 seems to be jamming me up.

I'm really a noob when it comes to graphics cards, directx and this type of thing.

Oh one more thing to add to the equation. Earlier I installed zeckensack's "glide wrapper" to emulate glide functionality on my card so I could get an old DOS game to work. But I don't think this would affect
why mame isn't working now. Pretty sure mame wasn't working even before I installed the glide wrapper...

Any ideas?

Here are my specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6850 @ 3.00GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 8190 Mb
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series, 1024 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 714851 MB, Free - 526686 MB; E: Total - 1430796 MB, Free - 121462 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., P5N32-E SLI
Antivirus: Webroot SecureAnywhere, Updated and Enabled

Thanks in advance.

SafeDisc and SecuROM (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, and Vista) http://www.howtogeek.com/230773/how-to-p...-8-7-and-vista/

Should work. I know you said that you went back to Windows 7. Just in case you decide to install Windows 10 again.

No longer an issue. Got around my own problem by just installing the most recent version of mame. It all magically works now in D3D mode.

Thanks for the tip on SecuRom/SafeDisc. If I ever go back to 10 I might use it.

No problem.

Glad that you fix it.

I was a little stumped, but having had a similar issue with onboard hardware, I was gonna say, 'why don't you try OpenGL'....but didn't. Now that I remember, I think around 151 I had a similar issue. Why were you wanting to run 151?
