USB Controller GORF
#349177 - 01/12/16 02:57 AM

Hi, I recently asked here on the subject of trying to Play GORF using the mouse instead of the arrow keys. I mentioned in the previous Post I was trying to get GORF to work on a Macintosh. I am now using a PC.

I received some suggestions that a mouse cannot be used and I should get a USB Game Controller and that will work like the arrow keys.

I was hopeful someone could message or reply with a suggestion on specifically which USB Controller to purchase and once it gets here, how I can make it work without using the arrow keys.

I am not good at PCs or programming. I am a hardcore Apple Mac person and PCs are mostly a mystery to me.

I look forward to any assistance someone can provide. Email, message, or reply on this thread.

Thanks,
Howard

The D-Pad on the XBox One controller is supposed to be nice.

Avoid the XBox 360 controller.

It should work right away with MAME once you have installed the drivers from Microsoft.

I use, and have always used, a 360 controller. Works great.

Same here. Nothing wrong with the x360 controller

Windows 11 64 bit OS
Intel Core i7-10700

They're fine for Robotron/Smash TV. Just use X/Y/A/B as a second D-pad by rolling your thumb.

Logitech Dual Action for the win (until it breaks)... or old school with a PS1/PS2 controller via USB adapter (speaking of which, I've still got to find my Boom/Lik-Sang adapter so I can rewire the thing on the PS side since the original soldering was crap and the thing failed in about 2 years - N64 side is still fine unless I use my Goldeneye gold controller, then it goes haywire, probably has a different/incompatible chipset compered to the grey ones).

Why not? It has two joysticks, and works fine in Robotron, Battlezone, Smash TV, etc.

I'd rather have two sticks then a d pad next to it unless you want to use the stick on the top left which is awkward to me. Just a personal preference.

I disagree, the D-Pad on the 360 controller is terribly imprecise. It's way to easy to hit a diagonal when you want to go straight in an 8-way game, and for 4-way games it's even worse because you get stuck when that happens.

Try playing Burgertime, Pac Man or Mr. Driller, any 4-way joystick game. I have two 360 controllers, an early and a late model, and the D-Pad is useless on both as far as I'm concerned. Useless as in throw-the-controller-at-the-wall useless.

It's not just me, there's a mod that involves cutting out and inserting a thin plastic disc between the D-Pad and the contacts underneath that's supposed to improve it. I tried but I couldn't get it right.

The D-pad seems like an afterthought. It's fine for modern games where it's mostly used for inventory or weapon selection but I would never recommend it for anything else.

I don't know what to say. Mine works fine, are you sure yours isn't bad? Generally I'd play Pacman with a Stick, as I would Burgertime. But take for example - QBert. I actually found that unplayable until I configured the D-Pad, and now it rocks.

Incidently, I don't play any modern games, only Mame. The 360 controller has two sticks, works out of the box without drivers, and meets my needs.

I'm not saying that the new controller isn't better - I've not tried it. You'd hope it would have improvements given it was designed years later, and costs more. But I have an issue with you suggesting the 360 is "useless", because I use one almost every day, D-Pad and all. No problems here.

Exactly my point.
