Actually PLAYING a console game in MAME

I can't find anyone or any posting explaining how to play a console game on the current MAME32UI. I have roms from my Colecovision and APF emulators. I played them in MESS, but I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I tried the Command Line and I still just get the Turned On screen. Can someone please help me?

Load the system.
Use the Tab key to use the File Manager to choose the cartridge.
After choosing cartridge, you may have to reset the system.
