Newbie help!
#347069 - 11/16/15 08:41 PM

Hello:

Bit of a MAME newbie here so I was hoping someone could help me out. I downloaded MAMEUI64 and put the zips for Metal Slug 1-5 and the Neo Geo BIOS all into the roms directory, and they worked great. However, I haven't been able to get any other games running or even recognized by MAME as a ROM.

I loaded the following ROMs into the same directory as the working Metal Slugs:

Star Wars Trilogy
Star Wars Arcade
Space Lords
Crazy Taxi High Roller
Air Combat 22

They were all zips and all in the same directory as Metal Slug but it didn't even recognize them as loadable ROMs. I also added the MAME .133 BIOS pack to the directory; it recognized the various BIOSes as something it could load but still couldn't see the other games. I tried this also with iFBA and iMAME with identical results (metal slug works, others aren't recognized). I'm sure I'm doing some dumb newbie thing, can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks!

> Star Wars Trilogy - make sure you have the parent set, swtrilgy. Game is playable with no sound. Needs a very fast PC. You might want to try running it in Supermodel instead of MAME.

> Star Wars Arcade - if it doesn't load, your romset is missing files. Note that emulation is incomplete for this game.

> Space Lords - don't bother, it's not playable.

> Crazy Taxi High Roller - don't bother, it's not playable and even if it was it would run too slowly to be playable.

> Air Combat 22 - make sure you have the parent set, airco22b. If that's what you have and the game still doesn't work, your romset is missing files, my guess is c71.bin.

Thanks!

Where can I go to figure this sort of information or for myself in the future? For example a database of which roms need which files, etc.?

Well, MAME itself will tell you what files you're missing if you run it from the command line. From your question I'm going to guess that you're using one of the "UI" builds, like MAMEUI.

Do yourself a huge favor and download the official command-line version of MAME from http://www.mamedev.org/ and seek out some tutorials on how to use the Windows command line. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks Moogly. I guess however I mean more along the lines of knowing which ones are playable, which have no sound etc.- Im assuming Sune didn't check every one of those ROMs in the command line.

For web interfaces for much of the information contained in MAME:

You can try Progetto EMMA but it's running about six versions behind at the moment.

Arcade Database until it catches up maybe? I haven't used it a lot yet.

We all still miss MAWS.

[EDIT] Also, the MAMEDEV wiki has some information along these lines, maintained mostly by Osso1.
