I just started to download the first zip, 1942.zip. You must have accidently included a Galaga bezel image in the zip. I told you to put the down before uploading. Now, if you'll excuse me... I have much more downloading to do. Oh, and I expect that Galaga image to be removed from the 1942.zip by the time I get back... or else you know what will happen to you
Is there a reason why one of the bezel images in bloodbro.zip is almost 44 MB? You want a smack in the mouth or what? I was wondering why, after loading the game, it was taking abnormally long to get to the game display. Now I know why. It looks nice though, but I think the file size of that bezel image is... is... a bit overkill.
Indeed... there are a few artworks that have a serious problem regarding the spacing. I don't know the correct terminology, but if you play the game with the artwork you uploaded, you'll see that the character you control and the enemies get hidden around the borders. For instance, in gaunt2.zip, if you move your character to the top of the screen, he'll disappear behind the bezel because the spacing is all messed up. You'll see what I mean when you play the game with the artwork...
Well, here are the games that have this spacing issue:
centiped commando digdug gaunt2
Also, the defender.zip does not work. The bezels don't get displayed.
And one last thing... for gberet.zip, you forgot to include the original artwork in the zip.
English!, Do You Read It BK! or are your eyes painted on?
> Sorry to keep adding posts to thread, for no apparent reason, but I have another > question because this is a massive undertaking ladies and gentlemen, just one > example: > > Green Beret. Green Beret is the Japanese/European version of Rush'N'Attack. > Rush'N'Attack has full artwork, Green beret only has a bootleg Marquee and some logos > floating about, SO WHAT DO I DO? Add Rush'N'Attack Art into Green Beret, wait that makes a bit of sense, but wouldn't there be a Rush'N'Attack Rom out there! Haven't looked!
All issues fixed. so far!, Thank you BK!. Let's try a fresh Dropbox. Shit!, I can't issue these zips until I figure out all my issues, can I? "Son Of Bitch! and Shit! We will get there eventually I suppose, this all new to me!
Quote: EDIT: FIXED, Image was 60meg. Thanks BK for pointing out File Size , I wasn't thinking about Image Size, sorry guys. give me a bit of time to go through the eighty zips and check em out!
Out of the artwork zips you've uploaded, the only zip that had a ridiculously large file size was the bloodbro.zip that I had mentioned, and you've already fixed that. All the other images' file size in the other zips seemed appropriate. So I think you're fine in regards to that issue.
Quote: My Green Beret Bezel, is half Rush'N'Attack half Green Beret hybrid,
Okay, I see what you've done. I must have missed this paragraph. Yes, you were correct in putting the artwork in a zip named gberet.zip. Because Green Beret is the parent game in MAME. Rush'N'Attack is a clone game in MAME. And in MAME, if there's artwork named after the parent game, that artwork is also available for display in all it's clones.
Quote: if I zip it up, make it available on Dropbox and someone uploads it to Mr.DO's official artwork zip archive, that's not good, for Konami, for M.A.M.E, Mr. Do or me!
You don't have to worry about that because customized artwork that people make do not get uploaded to Mr. Do's official artwork website because that website is only for official artwork, not customized artwork.
However, there is another section on Mr. Do's website where he does have customized artwork that others have made. It's located here --> http://www.mameworld.info/mrdo/mame_otherart.php?p=a#here But he hasn't updated that in quite some time. So people like Vaughn's, Comboman's, and Big10's customized artwork have not been added. So hopefully, some day when Mr. Do has some free time, he will add all you guys' customized artwork to that section of his website.
Okay, I checked the artworks that had the spacing issue that I had mentioned, and you seemed to have fixed them. Good job. Except for one... In gaunt2.zip, you have two choices, the "Widescreen Artwork" and "bezel". You managed to fix the spacing in "Widescreen Artwork", but the spacing issue still exists in the "bezel" option.
Now, I will begin downloading the rest and report any issues I find.
Found an issue in the mario.zip. It's Widescreen Bezel partially covers the gameplay in the lower-left corner and a little in the lower-right corner. If Mario or an enemy moves to the lower-left corner, they'll be hidden behind the artwork.
> Found an issue in the mario.zip. It's Widescreen Bezel partially covers the gameplay > in the lower-left corner and a little in the lower-right corner. If Mario or an enemy > moves to the lower-left corner, they'll be hidden behind the artwork.
Cheated this fix, just reduced slightly the game window instead of redoing artwork.
> You forgot to include the original artwork in the nemesis.zip <
You mean there's more Nemesis artwork out there in the form of Gradius artwork? or should I say We have a Kitchen?
Shit just got real!
EDIT: Awwww! I was about to fire up Photoshop one last time. But knowing Gradius is same as Nemesis doesn't add anything to the little Nemesis artwork I have, fiddle-sticks!!!!! Is Fiddle-Sticks considered swearing in America or is that still too spicy for you big girls blouses? EDIT EDIT: Just realised I hadn't hi-resed Nemesis yet. Still using low-res marquee stretched to look like Bezel....must update!

Gauntlet 2 "bezel" was just my outdated Widescreen version from years ago. Removed entry for 'bezel' and just left 'Widescreen' option as should be.
Thanks for fixing the issues I mentioned. I finished downloading and testing each one. All seem to be working fine. They look nice. I'm going to sleep now, tomorrow I'll list which artwork I liked the most.
Nemesis has been updated. and out of all them, it's still my favourite.
A big thank you for the support and guidance in this rapidly unfolding adventure, to everyone!, Never in a million years did I think this is where we'd be from the initial question I asked not too long ago......
Well that was fuckin' exhausting!
I think the way forward is I'll just start a request thread and just go from there? Sounds simple enough? I saw a Bezel in my travels, was a space game, can't remember it's name, but it was a brilliant artwork. Photoshop the shit out it!
I could quite easily start doing Vectors of all the bezels, but someone's gonna' pay me for that insanity I'm afraid.
My favorites are Arkanoid , Athena, Asterix, Gauntlet 2, and Xybots.
What are your favorites?
I don't know if you plan on making any more future bezels, but if you do, there's just one suggestion I'd make. And that would be to increase the gameplay display size. This way there would be a little less bezel, but more room for the actual gameplay display.
Yeah, I realised halfway through this last re-design that I was still using the resolution I had always used in 2005ish when I was given Batch Files that simply opened a window 1040 x something something mathematics. I did actually think the same thing, a little less art a little more screen would have been a better balance of screen space, but it's over, let it go man!
After Christmas I might go fuckin' apeshit again, after a respite period first. I need to get the constant nightmares about Vigilante and Ikari Warriors out of my head first, cleanse my chakra's and all that malarkey.
When/if you decide to start making more... when you are deciding which games to pick, it would be preferential in my opinion if you selected games that don't have any artwork already available for it. Because there are hundreds of arcade games in MAME that don't have any artwork. So instead of making customized artwork for a game like Xevious, where artwork already exists for it at Mr. Do's website, you could choose some other game that doesn't already have artwork available for it. Know what I mean?
Like you did with these 4...
Quote: Four with no original bezels, I don't mean to blow my own trumpet or anything, but,
And btw, that guy in that gif looks a little like Saul from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
This may actually never end now we've started. Fixed mistakes in Gauntlet 2(A swirly white border was missing) and Galaxian (one of the wasps had white background still).
You're going to tell ME when you're gonna leave? No, I don't think so. Now you can't leave!
What about including the original artwork in your gberet.zip? We talked about that before and I still don't understand why not. Just because you made customized hybrid artwork for that game, I don't see why that would affect your decision not to include the original artwork in the zip, like you did for the rest of the games.
No, no reason, just this. I did not know Rush"N'Attack was related to Green Beret, I first, many years ago, used Rush'N'Attack art for the same reason it's still used to this day, I borrowed the RNA art believing the two games unrelated (Never thought someone would see these Widescreens). That's it, oh! and Rush'N'Attack does have full art, I just don't have it, nor can I find anything better than what I found originally, to this day. This is what I got baby! Found this years ago. It's small but usable. Now that I know the 2 games are the same game, I will redo entire artwork...right now.... gimme 10min!
Green Beret artwork updated, still no usable official artwork found for Rush'n Attack to add to the ZIP.
It just dawned on me that I'll have to listen to comments and change these artworks as and when required, if someone points out any discrepancies with official/bootleg/regional or mistakes in my artworks. It is just lucky I love M.A.M.E. and don't mind giving birth to these artworks for others to enjoy. I suppose, in the end, I have given people more choice and that's never a bad thing.
I'll be playing M.A.M.E., listening to schlamming techno and hangin' about, refreshing this thread and awaiting your comments.
There is none my brother! Or should I say, I can't find any.... sorry just went to Mr.Do and sure enough, there's a Green Beret Official ZIP. My apologies BK, give me a minute to go through LAY and update ZIP. Back soon!
Green Beret properly updated with Instruction Cards from Mr.Do included. Thanks again BK, if you weren't here people might think I was a weirdo talking to himself, on a thread he created as well. Your advice, time and effort are all appreciated homeboy! You're a Bad Young Brother Son!!!!
Thanks again to everyone for helping me out, especially BK!
Any suggestions, comments or points of contention, mistakes or errors in officiallity/bootleggitry (are they words, they are now!), feel free to advise me on them when you spot them.
Updated Bermuda Triangle, the image I found of the original bezel is too small, so I have replaced it with something else that's less pixelated, until I find a better quality image.
It's barely lunchtime in America, for what it's worth. The Americans will probably be over then or another 6 hours later, if that. Can't speak for the rest of the world.
Speaking as an admin, really don't need you to keep bumping a thread over the course of an hour. People will respond when they do.
Glad you're doing well. But careful with the Lyrica... I've read that the withdrawals are just as bad as opiates and benzos. I know it must have been hell kicking the opiates you were on, and to go through that again would suck.
Alright! 'I'll give it a go for Wardner, by the way, a question!, Wardner is Japanese version of "Pyros". Once again there is no Wardner art besides a Marquee. that's it, Pyros has full artwork, but once again, like Rush'N Attack, I can't find any Bezel that is of a high quality (see below). So do I, like Green Beret/Rush'N Attack, make a hybrid, and call it Wardner? Here are the dimensions used for the first 80 Bezels:
Quote: What's the next sizes up, generally speaking?, Obviously it's maths x maths = more maths, but I have only used this resolution, what do you recommend using for larger Vert and Horiz windows.
Is there an equation for scaling up, because I would like to use the official, original Window Size for each game.
Some Vertical game windows seem squashed in height and some Horizontal game windows appear squashed in Width?
Will I just have to pick a default Vert/Horiz scale, and like the first set of bezels, some games will fit, some will fit with a little distortion?
I don't know, but I know Vaughan did a very good job of making the gameplay screen bigger. Check out the .lay files of his artwork and maybe you can figure out how to do it:
My man BK! Quick with an answer and a smile. I hope Vaughn doesn't mind me touching and copying and interfering with his lay files, I don't think he likes me enough to let me loiter near his ZIP's
Edit: I will use Vaughn's dimensions running MAME in Standard(3:4). Give me 2 years to redo all the artworks...
If you want, let AntoPISA know that it's fine for him to host/mirror your customized artwork on his website. His website is http://www.progettosnaps.net/ . It's a great website that most MAME frontend users utilize. It has almost everything on that site.
You're people who know people, good to know! Thanks BK.
I have made a decision about Bezel Windows and all that Jazz!
I am going to complete this Widescreen Bezel set, utilizing the windows as they are. When I have completed as many Widescreen Bezels as I can, I will then turn around and start another set of all the same games but do them maximised (Standard 3:4) like Vaughn's Dimensions.
Just for simplicity sake, I have a 2 gigabyte PSD File with all the Bezels as layers in one single file. Not going to start doing different dimensions in the PSD File, too confusing for my simple brain. So I will do 2 complete sets of Bezels. Mine and Mine(at Vaughn's Dimensions) I shall call the second set "Big K' Big Screen Bezels". You deserve nothing less for your efforts Big K! And just guess what my friends call me irl. "Big A" You know, because my names Aaron.
Anyway back to business, lots of work to do. First order of business though, giving me new bezels to do, I have three on my plate, but I can has 80 bezels on the go at any one time. Now this should keep me busy for the coming year. Or two!

Ah! So that's what Progetto-Snaps is. More things that are good to know, now I just gotta' figure out what a SNAP is!

Do you use the official MAME? Or do you use a derivative or frontend?

All I do is enjoy the artwork, make suggestions, and provide the little help that I know how... it's you who does all the effort and who deserves the credit. So you should call it "Big A's Big Screen Bezels".
For a few verticle games, he decided to toy with the idea of including a top and bottom bezel part... a very slim top and bottom. - Example: http://postimg.org/image/eega5xvzn/ But he decided against it, since he felt verticle games look better and have more an official look to it with no top and bottom bezel.
So for verticle games, which type of bezel style are you going to go with? The type with no top and bottom bezel?... or the type with a very slim top and bottom bezel?
Do you use the official MAME? Or do you use a derivative or frontend?
MAME64.exe 0.167.0.0

I do these artworks with my eyes closed, besides I won't have done the new set on my own volition without you. I might call them "Big Karnak's Big Set Of Hanger's"

Well on first consideration, Vaughn was right to use official MAME res or STANDARD3:4, eliminating the top and bottom, it's what the MAMEDev's would have wanted. I could do mine with a small strip (not enough for logo or whatever, but enough to tie the two sides together, a Brazilian Bezel if you will.
Quote: there can't be more than 150 MAME games out there.
There are over 4,000 working arcade games in MAME. And that's not even including "clones", that's just "parent" games.
Quote: MAME64.exe 0.167.0.0
By your answer, I'm assuming you aren't aware of all the different kinds of derivatives and frontends available... I had a hunch about that, especially since you didn't know what "Snaps" were. There is a whole world of goodies and eye candy out there for MAME that you aren't aware of yet. I'd recommend you check out the derivative MAMEUIFX. Explore that derivative and you'll see that there are tabs that are able to display the arcade cabinets, marquees, control panels, in-game snapshot, title, etc. of each arcade game. You can download those packages from http://www.progettosnaps.net/ .

What do you think?
Hmmm, I don't know, I guess if I had to pick which one, I guess I'd go with no top and bottom bezel for verticle games. Because with real arcade cabinets for verticle games, the majority of them don't have any top and bottom bezel. Plus, I'm assuming it would be easier and quicker for you to make this way... it's less work.
Goofing around on the beach, my two daughters are trainee Life Savers, long story short, I did a tug o war with my youngest daughter and afterwards she was pretending to be tired, so I made a face and fell face first into the sand.
Well, the sand was wet and hard from the tug o war, I landed hard and it took my breathe away, three days later went to the doctors, couldn't breath. one x-ray later, two broken ribs.
I've been meaning to write a guide to creating Bezels for some time, but have put it off. They're not difficult to do at all - it's just that the information that's out there isn't written for idiots like me. Once I'd figured it out I wondered why I found it difficult in the first place.
Still - if there is interest in a (lengthy) explanation, than I'd be willing to give it a go. It's probably not worth the effort for just one person to read, but if there's more I know I sure would have appreciated an idiots guide when I started.
On another note - Mame is founded on sharing. As such, there is nothing sacrosanct about my LAY files. If I recall correctly, Mr. Do actually pointed out an error in my LAY files - but since everything works I've never changed them. Point being, if my LAY files help you, then use what works.
Having said that - LAY files alone aren't the complete solution - it's also about the template you use to complete the artwork.
The rules for me, from the beginning, was that I wanted to maximize the gameplay area - since first and foremost, I want to play the game, not look at pretty pictures. There have been times when I've really really wanted to increase the Bezel size so I had more room to create a bezel - but I resisted because on standard monitors the gameplay area quickly gets ridiculously small. IMO, of course.
For me it helped to have a "philosophy" or goal in mind when I started. Mame users want authentic artwork first. If authentic artwork exists, I see no reason to mess with it (although I have some games where I feel the Bezel is too big, and I might one day go back and make them fit my own templates to maximize game screen size.)
So, I target games with no official artwork. Better something than nothing, sort of thing. I'm not saying anyone should follow my example, just saying it helped me.
Mr. Do has an automatic LAY file creator on his web site (although I'll be honest and say I found it too complicated to use). So I figured out how they work and now use Notepad. Still, maybe Mr. Do's tool will work for you.
