-video output and HLSL / GLSL settings

Hi all, a MAME user brought this my attention. If you enable HLSL, MAME uses Direct3D 9 as the video renderer even if you set the -video to auto.
But if you enable GLSL, MAME doesn't use the OpenGL video renderer, it still uses Direct3D 9. How does the auto renderer setting actually works ?
Must the user select OpenGL video renderer manually to use GLSL effects ?
Sorry if this is a dumb question or if it has been asked before.

- video AUTO in Windows MAME automatically switch to Direct3D.
To use GLSL shaders, user must set to OPENGL the -video option.
This is how MAME core works.
