Question about soft lists

I haven't been keeping up with things much these days. I know soft lists were implemented awhile ago but never messed with them. Are they basically just a list of games for a given system recognized as good dumps?

From what I understand they are a listing of removable media like cartridges, tapes, disks, optical, etc.
There's a nice article on etabeta's site and although it's an old post, a lot of the information is explained very well and the information is completely relevant.
Feel free to give it a look http://mamedev.emulab.it/etabeta/2010/05/11/documenting-software-at-last/

My NES roms for example are zips with .nes file extensions (no-intro). I noticed that softlists are expecting a zip with prg and chr files contained in them. Will Clrmame do the conversion work if I import softlists?

I guess the no-intro sets aren't considered any good, cause none of mine are recognized by Clrmame. Not when the datfile comes from mame.exe and softlist imported, anyway.... No-Intro's datfile verifies them as good though. They'll still play if I load them manually, but not as nice as QMC2 adding them to a list.

That's because No-intro uses a different dumping standard. No-intro uses .nes files which are all cartridge chips plus a header contained into a single file. MAME softlist use separate dumps all contained in a compressed file with the loading info into the nes.xml file. Both standards are valid dumps.

Correct. Pleasuredome has Software List torrents that let you fill up on dumps for all systems quite quickly

You could also get a partial set so ClrMAME could recognize them into the softlist by splitting the .nes files using tools like uCON64. However it involves command line knowledge.
"ucon64.exe -s *.nes" command if I recall correctly.

And most importantly they are [FREE] \o/ \o/ \o/
Your mileage will vary depending how much free disk space and bandwidth you're allowed to use though :P

I thought about going the PD route, but the last time I tried to register, they had a policy of no email addresses from msn, hotmail, yahoo, etc. is that still the case?
I pretty much only collect roms for games I played growing up. I'm way past the Pokerom phase of emulation.

I just signed in for giggles and was amazed that my account was still good. Seems I haven't been active on there since 2009! Time to catch up!
I had an old comcast.net email assigned to it. I was able to update it to a newer MSN email with no hassle. But maybe new accounts are treated differently, not sure.
