Definitely, thanks. Were there no other differences between what it made and the 1.6 dump in mame? Nothing cleaner with the fresh drive? We should try any known bugs against the newly made image.
It seems like I ran this on the real hardware once and made a hd but probably to the wrong size drive.

actually I think its pretty cool myself. It's neat to see you being able to pull this off and actually update thru mame.
I have a couple ?'s, 1- lets say I have the original game and pull the harddrive and dump it could I update the new disk image thru mame and load that updated image onto a new harddrive, thus allowing me 2 things, one having the original harddrive and game, two if it should corrupt something it would corrupt only the image and not my original game?
If the answer is yes to both I could see where game owners could use this feature.
Great work Haze, even if I as a end user don't always benefit from the updates its still cool and appreciated to see them added.

I don't think either image is really cleaner than the other, the 1.2 we have has 4 profiles on it, the 1.6 has a lot more, the actual game data / program code seems to be the same after updating..
but yes, it updates to the same version as the parent set ;-)

All the fun of updating your own cab without the hassle of bent/broken legs & static discharge...
Yipee!
When are we going to add the fun of cleaning fingerprints, pop, & cigarette ash off our screens too?
Seriously though it is sweet to do...

How large was the hard disk in these? I'm guessing 10 or 20 MB?

No you wouldn't need to use a sketchy hard drive for that, just roms.

Our Gauntlet Legends (v12) uses a Quantum Fireball HDDs at 3,2GB or 4,3GB. Our Gauntlet Dark Legacy (v24) uses a Quantum Fireball 4,3GB for sure.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever played these games, and are you aware of when they came out?
In 1998 it would have been cheaper to use ROM chips if it were just a matter of 10 to 20 megabytes. The amount of art and sound assets in the game easily would need gigabytes of storage. This isn't the 1980's Gauntlet titles we're talking about here.

Is it not possible to clear all the profiles through the service menus?
When I submitted the alternate Area 51 Site 4 chd, I made sure to clear all the stats and high scores on the real hardware before creating that chd.
I always thought that should be done to all the hard drive images where possible just for the sake of cleanliness, although I know it would cause a lot of bitching about having to update all the chds.

yes, they can be (although you have to do it as a separate step to 'reset settings to factory defaults' otherwise it resets the option to reset the stats.
i'll probably clear them at some point, I guess they weren't done at first because messing with images before things work is risky, best to dump first / make things work / be confident you're not going to corrupt the disk THEN work out the details.

I agree doing it through emulation is sketchy at best!
I did it on the original hardware where I could run the disk test afterward and feel more confident.
I cleared the version of Area 51 Site 4 originally supported by Mame as well and offered a clean chd but never heard back.
Being a game that will never be 100% emulated unless the Jammit chip is Decapped I figured I should do what I can while I can.

I remember when GL was first in MAME it had existing data, then a few versions later a new clean CHD was released - so I don't know where the 4 profiles come from as I was sure I saw an update saying a clean CHD was provided!

By the way, I think it was MAME version 102u5 that had the CHD changes for GL (and I'm sure the factory reset was done on these - so not understanding the 4 profiles in the current version).

Maybe during the v4->v5 upgrade, someone took a bad version of the image
