Freeware Batch MP3 to WMA converter req.
#343850 - 08/11/15 07:19 AM

Howdy, with the move to Windows 10, my old standby audio converter from the XP Plus Pack (remember that?) no longer works.

What are your favorite freeware programs for batch MP3 to VBR WMA file conversions? A few of the ones I've tried are munging the ID3 tags etc. Thanks -

Wouldn't you want to leave them in the format they were in to preserve what quality there is? Recompressing a compressed audio file makes it sound bad.

I use Audacity. (http://audacityteam.org/) Drag a block of files into the program and then from the menu select "Export Multiple" or whatever the thing says and then pick your format. When you download and install the program, also download and install the audacity FFmpeg library from the page and you can convert to wma, m4a, ac3, etc. Add Lame and FFmpeg libraries for Audacity from this link: http://lame.buanzo.org/#lamewindl . It is easy to use and a great all around audio editor.

This. Unless you're using the music on an really ancient system, music device, or program, you really have no reason to keep using WMA.

I use DBPoweramp. Suppports all formats and has multicore support. I converted 493 flac files to mp3 in 29 minutes on an i7 2600k.

Worth the money.

Fre.ac. Freeware, can convert from and to MP3 (with a DLL 'cause of stupid patents), MP4/M4A, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, and WAV, takes seconds to convert from format to format. Free.

Thanks all, so far fre:ac is looking very good, handled the large jobs I threw at it.

BTW - My local music collection is ~210,000 songs in VBR WMA, I've carefully curated it over the years and standardized on WMA initially for its equivalent audio quality at roughly half MP3 bitrate and file size.

At any rate, thanks for the suggestions -

Another one to try would be mediamonkey. Think it can do batch conversion.

Not free, but dbPoweramp is worth every penny.

You'll devote gigabytes of space to a full MAME set but you're nitpicking over mp3 vs WMA file sizes???

You will lose audio quality converting one lossy format to another. You may not be able to tell it, but you will nonetheless.

My collection used to be all WMA, but I bought an iPhone and realized it doesn't support WMA. iTunes offered to convert, but I just re-ripped my collection from CD to mp3 for reasons above. WMA and AAC may be superior to mp3, but I know mp3 is supported everywhere. My puny collection is all of 2000 songs and a bunch of it was already mp3 (Amazon purchased music) so not too bad. You my friend, with 200,000 songs.....Eff that!

Meanwhile here I am re-ripping all my CDs to FLAC because I'd rather have a lossless copy. And if I want a version for a music player I can just convert it with fre.ac.
