Home FTP help
#341954 - 06/27/15 09:07 PM

This is only on topic because it will also be used for MAME Artwork, but I figured the people that would know the best will be browsing here, so...

I need to get the Artwork FTP back up and running... I've accepted the fact that it's not going to be through MAMEWorld. My internet connection at home is badass now, so I figure that's a good enough solution. Someone else recently sent me an artwork file, using I guess personal FTP using a "NoIP.com" address, and he must have had badass bandwidth also, because I downloaded the thing in less than 2 seconds.

On top of that, I've pretty much decided to get rid of the one tower computer in the house. Everyone has their own laptop now (thank you Dell Outlet 50% off sale). But there still needs to be a central place for certain files, so I was thinking of getting something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-EX2-Diskless-High-performance-reliability/dp/B00I2P53NY/

I already have two 3TB drives in the tower, so I would back that up, then move those into the NAS.

So now the question... this particular NAS has two USB ports on the back to extend storage. I want to plug in a drive to that to make it the Artwork FTP drive. Then set it up with a username/password, that I can give out discreetly.

IS THIS 100% SAFE?

In other words, if I do this right, a user will only be able to access the Artwork FTP, and not be able to access the other drives on the network?

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

Yes, that's right. You specify the folders / drives that can be accessed and the user name and password. Depending on your NAS, you might even be able to setup levels of user. e.g. standard user has read access to a specified folder. User Level 2 might have read access to several folders, write access to another folder, and so on.

Nothing - NOTHING - is 100% safe on the net. However, don't put anything sensitive on any drives you hook up and you should be fine. Just keep an eye on things: bandwidth usage, password attempts, number connections, etc, and you will soon see if something is going wrong.
