Handheld games in 0.162?
#340986 - 06/02/15 10:29 PM

My post in the sticky got deleted (which is fine).

But am I correct in assuming we are talking about MAME now emulating stuff like those Coleco Arcade handhelds with the old style LCDs from the early eighties?

Yes. MESS by nature covers anything and everything with a CPU that doesn't include your typical coin-operated Arcade Games. MAME is now an 'everything' build so that means anything MESS did now MAME does in the official builds. The SUBTARGET=arcade which produces a "mamearcade.exe" does not have these. Many of the Coleco mini-arcades, Gakken, Bandai, Epoch, Bambino, Parker Brothers and many other games are also emulated at the moment with more to come as they are dumped and in many cases new cpu cores are being needed. Even the classic Simon memory game is playable!

In fact, Haze just got done making a video to demonstrate the Coleco Donkey Kong in MESS:

lol. That's crazy and the emulation looks perfect even the sound.

I guess we need to start thanking artistic work too now as well as coding.

I forgot how advanced it was but I know the Coleco handhelds were the best. I also remember a very advanced Defender that a friend had. There may have been a couple of Defenders out there.

I know also some were only available in the US and some in Europe. The Coleco Arcade handhelds were not in the UK but we had some other gems.

I don't know what the MESS architecture behind it is but to me this seems like a small step towards mechanical games such as Pinball.

These are fully electronic - most of them run on 4-bit calculator CPUs with an LED, LCD, or VFD display. Even games like Simon, which you'd expect to be discrete logic, ran on one of those CPUs and are now represented in MAME.

Then I'll root for the day one of these get to MAME. I'm crossing fingers. :P

Tamagochi was a surprise too. Even with the Pokemon mini supported, it never crossed my mind I would see it in MAME.

Not related to MAME per se, but I came across these handheld simulators the other day, which might be of interest to some:

Put him out of business will make him go fishing more often on his retirement.

LOL..

For some reason I picture him sitting on the end of a dock playing some hand-held fishing game. I guess I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue.

Thanks for the reply but that is not what I was referring to or found significant. What I did find interesting and relevant was the use of external graphics that are neither emulated or on the ROMs.

Right, like the artwork in Golly Ghost All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.

Sorry to disappoint you, mate.

I don't fish from the dock.

I prefer scuba diving and snorkeling to catch fish.

Anyway, it will take long before every LCD game would be properly emulated. I would welcome that day with impatience, though, as much as I welcome the new additions to MESS.

Still too young to retire. And quite a bunch of things to do, other than programming simulators.

Oh ok. Are you helping the MESS DEV team? http://forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm

No I'm not helping atm. I helped by submitting an updated and fixed CreatiVision driver a few years ago.
