Mame Custom Buttons Missing

After googling around...I found http://www.mameaddicts.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=507 which explains how to use Mame's custom buttons. However, I don't have the custom buttons menu option when I tab. It doesn't exist. Was it removed from Mame? Or is there some kind of special compile patch I need to use when compiling?

That person was using MAMEPlus!, not vanilla MAME. I have no idea if MAMEPlus! is even developed anymore.
