MAME 0161b_i686 ?
#340043 - 05/15/15 04:45 AM

I've always used the i686 version of MAME ever since the first one was released because it just made sense to me to use the version which makes optimal use of modern processsors (I had assumed the standard version was still there for people who prefer to make use of an old machine they have idling about).

But now it seems the optimized version of mame for 32bit has been retired. Is this true and if so, why?

If you want optimized then make the jump to X64 capable CPU and o/s.

It's the best upgrade you could possibly do.

Thanks, but for compatibility purposes with my enormous library of PC games spanning 3 decades (from DOS games to LEGO Batman 3), I'm sticking with 32bit. I've read far too many cases of backward-incompatibility to justify upgrading for the sake of 1 or 2 games.

For all your DOS games, do what I do and use dosbox which runs every DOS game I have thrown at it (including games that were a pain to get running on a real DOS machine). And its how many companies who have re-released their old DOS games have supported those games (ID Software uses it for old DOS titles on Steam, EA uses it for old DOS games on Origin and any number of companies use it for old DOS games on gog.com)

There are ways (not 100% sure what though) to run old 16 bit Windows games on 64 bit systems as well.

Or you could just run Windows XP in a 32-bit virtual machine on top of a more modern Windows running as 64 bit and use that for any games that are incompatible with a 64 bit system.

Some more recent graphics-intensive games that only work on XP would be quite laggy on a virtual machine. For the time being, I'll stick with XP. Its less hassle.

Except that anything recent enough to have issues will work just fine on Windows 7 x64 even if its only 32-bit.
With the exception of hardware drivers and a couple other wierd things, I have yet to see anything 32-bit that wont run on 64-bit systems. Every 32-bit game I have tried runs just fine on my 64-bit system (better than when I was running Windows XP in 32 bit on the same CPU even)

Windows 7? Most people who are upgrading their OS will be upgrading to the most current OS, Windows 8.1. And soon, Windows 10 will be released.

We are talking about old fashionable people here, do you think someone who still plays old games needs an Operative System so Internet dependent? I would install a firewall and block anything that "requires an update", but given Windows 7 is still supported, that's what this kind of user base will use as a first option.

I use Windows 7 and have no reason to upgrade, why should I when it works just fine for me

Windows 8/8.1 is an unusable piece of shit. I haven't seen Windows 10 yet, but I don't have much confidence in Microsoft at this point.

Starting from Windows 8, Microsoft started some heavy breakage of backward compatibility with the default settings.

You can often get success by tweaking the settings for each games, but it is definitively not a good option for retro gaming.
