I'd think it intentional to have a certain degree of 'vintage' to it. I'm surprised Stern can even make tables today.

You're kidding right? You rag on Stern for being uninspired and not taking risks and then praise Planetary Pinball? A company whose only product was a remake of one of the most popular Williams pins of all time? If that isn't the very definition of playing it safe and not taking risks, I don't know what is.
Stern may not be the most creative pinball maker in history, but they've managed to stay in business through a very difficult period when all other major pinball makers (Bally, Williams, Gottlieb, Sega, Data East, Capcom) have closed their doors. To me, that's a far greater accomplishment than just reproducing an existing design with guaranteed market.
