First post!

In all seriousness, congrats on getting all those Golden Tees running.

Why does breakout require so much CPU horsepower? Or was that a joke that flew right over my head?

Why don't you link to the actual post like this:
http://mamedev.emulab.it/haze/2015/05/08/post-release-progress/

If you link to the front page of the blog it becomes confusing if someone comes back later after more posts have been added to the blog.

Low-level discrete circuit simulation is computationally expensive.

Because this is what we're doing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_circuit_simulation
plus real-time generation of an audio signal and a video signal based on the simulation.

If you want a little more speed, try it in DICE, it may be a little better, maybe not.

Yep. And hoping to see arcade version of Virtual Pool just to see how different it looks versus the home computer edition.

btw: It won't be the same without the old text (being replaced) of:

- Copyright Nicola Salmoria and the MAME Team.
- Visit mamedev.org for licensing and usage restrictions.

Seeing Nicola's name gave the sense he is still around...maybe lurking...even though that is likely no longer the case.

And confirmed, DICE is hella faster.

So if both DICE and MAME are doing a form of circuit simulation, why is DICE so much faster? Does DICE cut that many corners? Is using the MAME framework that much slower? I ask to spark discussion, not that I don't understand a little of it.

I wonder if that gambling game has a license from the Olympics people for using those Olympic Rings (even if they aren't exact, they are close enough to get them sued).

Somehow I doubt they do...

Has anyone done much benchmarking of the non-CPU games in MAME and DICE? Do they mainly need really fast single threaded execution? Maybe the Intel Core i7-4790K would be good. It can be overclocked to about 4.7GHz. And no, I don't have one of these.

Haze's quote from his May 08,2015 update: 'Couriersud did some more work on Breakout, improving looks and performance (it now hovers around 100% on a 4Ghz i7 )'

>Has anyone done much benchmarking of the non-CPU games in MAME and DICE?

Likely no recent results since last year or year before and that was only testing Pong in MAME and nothing else.

Although users can now do their own builds, I am looking forward to when .162 is released since there will be optimizations work from couriersud that will help reduce overhead and allow non-cpu videogames to run faster. I am crossing fingers that this will have good results whenever multiple board non-cpu games (Tank or Computer Space, etc.) are emulated. In meantime, I figure next couple non-cpu video games in MAME might likely be Rebound or Quadrapong (or a pong clone like Paddle Battle) because most of the code is already supported with exception of a few unsupported ttl chips or in case the cab unit has unique hardware needing to be worked out (serve button or backlit lamps etc.)

no benchmarks but DICE is a very light emulator. It has extremely low CPU usage.
