what's your point? everyone uses new build tools, because they are requred for compiling 0.160 and 0.161.

There was a new update to the tools.
1. Download install.exe and complete installation. It will take some time to pull up-to-date code 2. Start buildtools.bat (plain cmd) or cmder.exe (fancy console) from installed folder (by default it is C:\buildtools) 3. From time to time run update in order to update tools 4. Download MAME source

Since I don't require exotic directories and custom paths (It all takes the same disk space anyway :P)
I've found it more efficient to update the tools with GIT since you are still pulling source with GIT anyways.
I've posted this on another forum.
Quote:
If you have Tortoise GIT installed you can simply navigate inside your buildtools directory.
Right click in there and select Git Clone with URL being https://github.com/mamedev/buildtools
After everything is up to date with a success message you can run buildtools.bat and let it do it's thing.
Then pull the latest GIT with those files being in src directory.
After that you can run cmder and put something basic like *make -j5* or w/e you usually do and it works

On a related note, is there a tutorial (step-by-step) anywhere on how to compile MAME using the new tools? I haven't rolled my own since .153 and everything has changed since then, I think.

Thanks!
I'd got as far as 3 but wasn't sure how to use cmder.exe

yes, you don't need old mingw folder anymore. just install new build tools as described here.

Thanks!! Not that Im worried about space just see no reason to keep obsolete files or folders on my computer. so thank you for the response !
BTW Im running win7 64 bit, duoCore 3.2, and it seems these new tools are a lot slower at compiling then MingW64. I also noticed that thru my monitor it shows buildtools only running about 50 to 60% of the cpu, the older Mingw would peg my cpu monitor around 90% are there any commands that would benefit the DuoCore and Compiling speed ? Not b*tching just wondering...

you have two cores? then add -j3 to your make line:
make -j3 STRIP_SYMBOLS=1 or make -j3 PTR64=1 STRIP_SYMBOLS=1 (for 64-bit MAME)
(STRIP_SYMBOLS=1 is for reducing MAME executable size).

Ah Yeah !! thanks that makes it run 100% and compiles faster !
wasnt' sure adding j3 would work with the new tools and I didn't want to mess something up. Figured it was better to ask and get the correct answer then to find out I might have mame errors and it being due to using wrong commands.
So again thank You !! I have gained another 1.5 gigs to my hard drive AND compiled using both cores ! Thanks for the answers and your time. ITs greatly appreciated....
