Merged versus split sets

Is there any quality loss in roms that are merged rather than split? Specifically neogeo arcade games from the 90's.

Of course not, why would there be? Merged vs split is just a different way of arranging the same files.
Emulated arcade games don't lose fidelity when they are compressed. Like for example a jpeg image or an MP3.

That is why I was asking....because jpeg or mp3 compression reduces quality.

It's the difference between lossless and lossy compression. You can't do lossy compression on game code, it would destroy it. Zip and rar and 7z are lossless compression. You can even get lossless compression built into picture and audio files with formats like png and flac. Definitely worth spending a few minutes researching the topic.

It's not the same thing.
If zipping, unzipping and rezipping ROM dumps somehow altered the data within, then you'd just have a bunch of useless files that would no longer load in any emulator, or on original hardware.
