[strider2] freezes after around 5 minutes

[strider2] freezes after around 5 minutes. It doesn't matter what stage you choose to start, after completing a scene or two in the stage you select, the game will freeze in the middle of gameplay. (Each Stage has a few scenes). Try completing a few scenes and it will freeze for you as well. Sometimes it will freeze after just a minute or so of playing. It varies... I can pinpoint what causes the freezing.
Win XP 32-bit

Have you ruled out that it's not a hardware or disk fault on your end?
I just ran through the first 6 scenes and killed the Emperor Dragon completing all of stage 1 without any freezes here on my end.
Exactly which build and what version of MAME are you running?

strider2 is known to crash randomly, according to the source (zn.c, line 276).

The official command-line MAME 0.160. Are you using 32 or 64-bit?

well maybe that's why it's not crashing for you? Osso said it's known to crash randomly... maybe it crashes more frequently on a 32-bit rig than a 64-bit rig.

What's strange is that numerous MAME versions ago, I played Strider 2 from the beginning to end without it crashing. So I was surprised when I tried playing it yesterday and it started to crash after a few minutes. Very weird.
I don't know if it should officially be marked as NOT WORKING though. That seems a little harsh & drastic, especially since it's such a popular game and doesn't necessarily always crash (according to B2K).

I triggered the freeze about 3 or 4 times running through the entire game.
MAME will tell you save states aren't supported for this game, but they save and load fine, so you can recover your progress if you hit a freeze.
Not ideal for the average gamer though as it can be really frustrating for them to have their game play halted like that introducing a horrible gaming experience because they are not expecting it.

do we know what could possibly be causing the random freezing? If not, how can this bug ever get fixed if we can't even figure out why & when the freezing occurs.
