MAME4droid(0.139u1) 1.9.1 Added mouse support(+trackballs like X-Arcade Tankstick) for Nvidia Shield devices (You have to enable on settings). New video sync and refresh speed options. Improved touch DPad. New touch Buttons.

that's good news.i haven't tried yet,but if i try a lightgun game,can i use the touchpad to shoot where i press my finger on,or do i have to use the analog like if it was a mouse?

It should be possible to update this past 0.139 now - 0.160 builds and runs out of the box on most ARM Linux setups.

It is great it uses UniBIOS for NeoGeo Games now. Only problem is, 3.1 is better than the older ones. 3.1 has a few more fixes. For Example:
Samshow2, if you use either the Unlimited Time or Unlimited Life, after you Win, you have to keep turning off and on that Code/s because if you do not, it gets a glitch where it will not stop the Point Calculation.
UniBIOS 3.1 takes care of that Glitch. Better than using the MAME Cheat or the older UniBIOS Cheat.

RB: Does this mean we can/will be able to compile MAME/MESS ourselves for Android?
[ 80's h/w emulated + nvidia shield console = greatness??? ]

Yes. I would like to update it in a few months (now I not have the time) to a more recent build. Stay tuned.

To play lightgun games you can:
Plug a mouse using a OTG on nvidia shield devices (recommended). This is limited to shield devices cos android has not relative mouse input without rooting. I have used nvidia extensions to get relative input.
Use shield controller dpad or analog (or other controllers of course)
Use shield controller touch pad as a mouse (not recommended)
Use shield controller right stick which emulate a mouse (recomended for Arkanoid games instead analog joy)
Use your fingers as Light gun (the best one)

that's the method i'd like to use.it is enabled by default(or selectable)?
also,as posted above,having MESS and using the touch screen on those old pdas emulated there on the nvidia shield would be indeed "greatness"  hope someone can port it to android

Yes, we're working on making Android a turnkey option in the new GENie build system.
