Mame 159 HLSL Broken?
#337448 - 03/04/15 11:25 PM

I did a quick search but didn't see anything about it. Is HLSL broken in Mame 159? With it enabled using a default configuration file it crashes every time on launch. Disabled it loads right up to the rom selection screen.

I
rechecked 158 and it works fine.

I haven't used any of the last few releases yet, but I seem to recall something about some graphic updates; OpenGL being added to mainline..??

If you haven't already, try re-generating your mame.ini from .0159 and see if that have new options that you need to set.

This was tested using a "fresh out of the box" trial. Unzipped Mame, ran mame64 -cc from the command line, changed hlsl to be enabled and then tried to run mame. It's crashing just from the default.

After a little more testing it appears it's crashing under Windows 8.1. I tried switching it to a Windows 7 machine and it loads fine. Switched back to Windows 8.1 and it crashes every time using HLSL.

Run the DirectX End User Runtime Installer or whatever they call it nowadays, and install your video card's latest Windows 8 drivers if you haven't already. The first one is probably what will fix it though. Win8 doesn't come with a full working DX9 install, you have to run the installer to get it still.

Must be on your end. I use 64-bit Windows 8.1 and I'm not having any issues. I tried it on my regular install and it didn't crash, so I downloaded 32-bit, 64-bit, and i686 optimized versions of MAME from mamedev.com and extracted them to three separate folders, created new configs (via -cc), changed hlsl_enable to 1 in the configs, and played Donkey Kong (after copying the rom archive into the roms folder, of course). Didn't have any issue on any of the three versions.

Wow, weird. What's going on there? Just enforced DX9 deprecation?

A little bit of that and a little bit of saving disk space for corporate Windows customers who will never need DX9, I'd imagine.

It's been this way since Windows Vista. Most people never notice because PC games also install DirectX.

Hell, I thought it was included in at least 7, so I never thought about it.

Stranger still is suddenly (well, since a week ago, but it was out of the blue when I was trying to test Gyruss for sound) I can't get any video mode but ddraw of MAME down to at least 151 to run on my main PC machine. It plays blind, cos I can hear the coin-up. Curiously this started right after the latest 7 update a week-ish ago.....
