The updated category/genre/version ini files for usage with QMC2, MAMEUI and other frontends are finally ready, thanks to the work of Scuore and Swos
http://www.progettoemma.net/
As promised this new release features a re-organization of Casino and Electromechanical Categories... First of all, you can say goodbye to "Electromechanical - PinMAME" and "Fruit Machines": we now have
Quote:
Electromechanical / Coin pusher Electromechanical / Pinball Electromechanical / Reel Electromechanical / Utilities Electromechanical / Misc.
Most previous Electromechanical games are now in Electromechanical / Pinball, while Fruit Machines have been split among Electromechanical / Reels (the ones which have mechanical reels) and Casino / Reels (the ones which have video reels). The Utilities category is for test chips for Electromechanical boards, of course...
Concerning Casino category, instead, we added some Categories to better identify which kind of game they are
Quote:
Casino / Cards Casino / Lottery Casino / Racing Casino / Reels Casino / Roulette Casino / Multiplay
Cards is not only for card-based poker games, but also for poker versions with guitars, cubes, cans, etc., because it's always the same game; Lottery is for all the various Keno, Bingo and Lotto games; Multiplay finally is for games which feature both card games and dice games or fruit machines
Finally, we added a few more categories: Print Club (pretty much self-explanatory), Multi-cart Board (for those BIOS which can be launched with various carts inserted: Neo-Geo, ST-V and MultiTech already, and probably Playchoice-10 in a few months) and the categories Utilities / Update and Utilities / Test for the various Installer, Updater and Test boards that are emulated by MAME.
Have fun!

You did a great work, I really like the new categories. But, of course, I've got some complains ;-)
alien = Misc. llander = Shooter / Flying llander1 = Shooter / Flying mt_calga = Sports / Skateboarding pzletime = Puzzle / Sliding startrks = Shooter / Gallery tapatune = Quiz / English wpksocv2 = Sports / Soccer
Should be:
alien = Electromechanical / Misc. ### this seems pretty much electromechanical to me: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcV15g-a2Io llander = Misc. ### you just try to land on the moon, it is not a shooter llander1 = Misc. ### clone of llander mt_calga = Sports ### There are 5 events, the half-pipe (in which you use the skateboard) is just the first pzletime = Puzzle / Sliding * Mature * ### As I already wrote, this game can be kinky if you configure the options startrks = Maze / Shooter Small ### Last time you wrote that I convinced you. Did you change your mind? tapatune = Misc. ### This is not a quiz game, you just play some songs wpksocv2 = Electromechanical / Misc. ### This is just like wpksoc
What is the difference between "Mini-Games" and "Multiplay", and between "Ball & Paddle" and "Breakout"?
That's all. Thanks again for your work with progettoemma.net

Holy Moly! New categories... will use 'reel' sub-string to replace the 'fruit' sub-string, and use sub-string 'mechanic' to replace the 'pinmame' sub-string so my frontend keep both "Fruit Machines" and "Mechanic" categories options. Is this enough ?
Thanks for the hard work on the new Catlist.

System.ini and Multi-Cart Board.ini are not being displayed in MAMEUI and other similar derivatives. I don't know why.
Also, you should replace [*Mature*] with [ROOT_FOLDER] in the Mature.ini file... because there's only one subcategory, which is Mature games... it doesn't make sense to have to click the Mature folder and then click on the Mature subcategory in order to view the games. Ya know what I mean?

can you verify if you have chosen not to display BIOS and other non-game entries? all of the ones listed in those inis would be filtered out if you don't display BIOSes and devices

well, I don't actually use the mature.ini at all, but I was always under the impression that you might want to filter what kind of game to play (since you might go from a breakout clone, to a pachinko machine) but if more people think they should go to the [root folder] I have no problems to change the generation process for this one

sorry for the late reply, but yeah, that is exactly what you can do if you need to filter those categories or better: keep both the old and the new ones, so that you can support both catlists versions (for back compatibility)

I have no idea why some of the changes (star trek and lunar lander) got lost before the catlist packaging... maybe in one of the restores I had done while preparing the new "packaging procedure" I picked up the wrong DB dump. I would not expect anything else being lost, since I went manually through most of the other reported mistakes and they seem ok
Anyway, the ones you reported have been fixed again, except for wpksocv2 that for some reason is not marked as a GAME_IS_MECHANICAL in the source. I will see why it is treated differently compared to the first game and I hope to have it fixed in one way or another for 0.160
> What is the difference between "Mini-Games" and "Multiplay", and between "Ball & > Paddle" and "Breakout"?
Good question. Borders are a bit unclear and we went through a re-organization of these in the past week, so that for 0.160 the following apply
1. Breakout will be a category in the Ball & Paddle genre from now on, and it will be devoted to (of course) Breakout / Arkanoid type of games. The "root" Ball & Paddle will be used for games like Clowns or Jumping Pop, where you collect things while bumping on a paddle-like object, and a new category Ball & Paddle / Pong will be added for the pong-style games
2. Mini-games will be a category in the Multiplay genre, for games where the player faces multiple different (and typically short, whence the "Mini") games in the same session while progressing towards a "win". The "root" Multiplay category will be used for games where different levels consists of different genres of play (typical arcade example is Tron, but you can think to plenty of 8bit and 16bit tie-in games to get an idea). Finally, there will be a new category Multiplay / Compilation for games where at coin up you choose a single game among different ones (e.g. Pacman anniversary re-release or the chinese MAME bootlegs).
I hope to see fixes for these categories too, of course, but after 0.160 because in the meanwhile some fixes have already been done (progettoEMMA searches already implement this new organization )

OHHHH!!!!! I got a suggestion...
The Control.ini file from http://mameinfo.mameworld.info/ is missing [Button 1], [Buttons 2], [Buttons 3], ----> [Buttons 10].
If you compare that file to the Control.ini that is generated by MAME Plus! UI, you will see the huge differences.
The Control.ini generated by MAME Plus! UI has a file size of 534 KB.
The Control.ini included in the MAMEUI INI 0.159 (SVN 36298) files from the MameInfo website above has a file size of only 169 KB.
Aside from that, I'm not sure which file is more up-to-date and synched with the most recent MAME version?
Personally, what I did was I Copied the [Buttons '#'] subcategories from MAME Plus! UI's Control.ini and Pasted them into the other Control.ini file... because I assumed that the Control.ini from the MameInfo website is more up-to-date and synched with version 0.159 than the one generated from the MAME Plus! UI emulator.
So may I suggest you include the Control.ini file in your catlist package.
I attached the files on this post. The MAME Plus! UI Control.ini, the MAMEUI INI Control.ini, and the Combined Control.ini that I personally did mentioned above.

@etabeta... what do you think about my above post? About including Control.ini in your Catlist package?
