USB memtest86 won't boot [solved]
#336072 - 01/15/15 03:32 AM

Windows (7) says I have bad memory. So I got memt86, used their neat little usbboot app that comes with it - and it won't boot on the machine. I tried another machine, and it booted (no errors, I watched the whole process). Went back to the other machine, made sure the bios was set correctly, even F10'd to the boot screen and selected 'generic mass'....and it still passes it right by. I don't get it.

Been there. That's how I know. It popped up and say, 'hey, there's a problem, do you want to diagnose?', and it don't tell you shit else afterwards. Be nice, though, huh?

Maybe you missed this, it's at the bottom:

To run the Memory Diagnostics Tool manually

If the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool doesn't run automatically, you can run it manually.

Open Memory Diagnostics Tool by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type Memory, and then click Diagnose your computer's memory problems.‌ Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Choose when to run the tool.

.....I happened to have a blank CD.....lame shit.....and the first time it wasn't written correctly....but fortunately it's an RW, so I re-did it with ISOburner, and that booted. However. How do I know what sticks are bad? It shows this.... Oh. You have to do each stick individually? Fauuck.

@Sune: right. At the beginning if it detects errors it says 'hardware issues found. to identify and repair them you'll have to contact the manufacturer...' . It doesn't show any diagnostics, and once it's back in Windows it says 'memory is bad, and it can fuck up your system. Fucking useless.

That's Windows for you. Totally useless utilities.

Soome-tiimes. So, all good now. I happened to get some extra ram recently for this machine, and found a bad stick there, too. Thanks for the help.
