Are rom files the same size as the originals?
#335896 - 01/10/15 05:55 AM

You know, on the boards? (I'm not really interested in hard drive-based games, more particularly golden age.)

No, the original ROMs tend to have additional readable data fields that aren't included in the dumped files. Fortunately, MAME is smart enough to infer this additional data from the data contained in the ROM dumps. This is why MAME is typically only any good for playing games, and the people who would ever want to use it to burn ROMs in order to fix existing boards are just out of luck.

Also why nearly every ROM dump out there has a file size that is a multiple of 2: 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, etc. And not, you know, the originally random size those original ROMs were.

Yup. The hardest part of dumping popn3 last night was deciding what data to capriciously leave out.

That's because rom sizes are metric and not imperial

i think mame team generally leave out anything in Basic, eg: 10 Print "By Taito! Do Not Write Us!" ..
i dont know why u end up with an even number though. i suppose anything else would be...

Also, PROMs add weight and increase the overall coefficient of drag both on the board and in the driver. It's better to leave them out for efficiency's sake.

I know you guys are just goofing on the size thing, but seriously... while the size of the dumps may be the same as the original roms, the weights are rarely right, meaning the density of every rom MAME works with is off. Ever tried Toobin' or Swimmer on MAME versus a real cab?

MAME ROM file sizes are subject to the ch-ch-ch-chia effect. It doesn't happen to the originals.

The only logical explanation is that all dumpers have an OCD for powers of 2.
