HLSL not working. Mame crashes when using the "Toggle Post Processing" Key [Solved]
#335831 - 01/07/15 11:57 PM

Hey guys!

I've been trying to get some good 'ol scanlines working on my system. I tried multiple versions of mame but I just can't get the HLSL feature to work.

I've tried many different mame.ini configurations from all around the web and even tried Mame Plus to set it up. Nothing ever changes. When I try to use the key to toggle post processing, mame instantly crashes.

Mame Plus reports an "Access Violation"...

My system:
Intel Pentium 4
ATI Radeon X1950 XT (Directx 9c, 256mb)
1 GB RAM
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 SP3(32bit)
Screen Resolution set to 800x600 (Default is 1280x1024)
Just updated my DirectX and graphic card driver

I can't post the complete error message here because my cabinet is not hooked up to the internet and is not running the explorer shell.. It can be done, but it will take ages for me.. lol

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: This is my graphics card:

Unfortunately your system specs aren't good enough for HLSL

Too bad =( I thought it would be enough since my graphics card supports shader 3.0 and has directx9c...

Or is it the low amount of ram?

Mameworld's minifaq says the graphic card is good enough for the bare minimum ". In cases for bare minimum usage (Geforce 6,7 Series, ATI Radeon R520/X1300–X1950, "

Thank you!

When HLSL was introduced, I was the owner of an on board GeForce 6100 with an Athlon X2 4400. Performance with HLSL enabled caused all games (no matter who fast otherwise) to require Frameskip of 6-8 to even function at 100% speed. Not optimal at all but babe minimum yes. Since then, I think, the bar might have been raised.

There is a problem too with XP, 32-bit and GeForce recent drivers causing crashes and blue screens. If you have an older driver, (circa 2009-2010) try that one with MAME.

Ditto. I had the same problem with my GeForce 6150 n430 machine. Found the original drivers, and I was back in business. It is very slow on raster games+HLSL, though, and only runs a handful of vector games with glow at full speed. However, my GeForce 6200 128mb, runs faster (it is an NV43 A, though, and I have 8pp/3vp versus the stock 4/2). So your card should be fucking plenty, even at 1280x1024.

Here's the thing, though: HLSL scaling at 800x600 looks like ass. (Vector is unaffected and looks great.) You need at least 1024x768.

Thanks for the replies.

In theory, it should work at least to some degree right? I mean, I can run the games easily at 1280x1024 without any issues (exept frame drops in metal slug).

I just don't understand why It's not doing a difference if I edit the hlsl enable to 1. I don't even have the slider controls except for Master Volume and screen stretching.

I tried using the -hlsl_enable command when launching a game.. No difference. No crash, no effects.. nothing.

So should I downgrade my ati graphic drivers? I'm using the latest version of catalyst control center (complete with driver up-to date) from around 2010.

Some kind of problem with your card. Try rolling back the drivers to the original release. Try a different card if that doesn't work.

I've tried nearly every possible driver for my graphics card. They all work fine except that HLSL (and the slider controls for it) don't "show up". Maybe you guys can look over my mame.ini.. Maybe there is something not set up properly..

I finally got it to work! I've had to install directx 9 manually as the web installer didn't install everything needed. What a pain all this was...

Thanks a lot for the help though!

Go-ddamn, I thought of telling you to do just that, as that is what I had to do recently, but discounted the idea because you said you have the most recent DX.
