Yet while the demons and apparitions were never going to leave anyone shaking with fear, the difficulty level was a huge hammer blow to players. This was one very tough blood-splattered cookie – has there ever been an arcade title quite as brutal?
Quite as brutal?
All Gradius games. All Toaplan vertical shooters. All Raiden games. All of the various Bullet Hells, like DoDonPachi and its sequels.
And that's just the shooter genre. There are many, many arcade games whose difficulty exceeds Ghost N Goblins.

Hampered controls (not being able to shoot up/diagonal and having to go through the game twice to beat it had to be someone's fucking stupid idea of a cruel joke.
I liked the games, but they suffered from some piss poor game design.

Capcom games of the period were hit and miss. Gunsmoke is by far the best, all-round. Bea-utiful graphics. Black Tiger is a runner up, and 1943 is a close second. Graphics-wise Ghouls and Ghost is very pretty.
As for difficulty....yes it tops, because of the 'physics'. It's like trying to fuck with a three-inch dick (no I don't know from experience, but my sense of engineering is keen). And then the lack of firing up. At the time, I was all, 'Aum....really?? What year is this?' But clearly it was intended. Ghouls and Ghosts needed to have it though, both in game play, and just to survive in the arcade.
