Atari 2600 Driving Controller with MAME

Has anyone got an Atari 2600 Driving Controller to work in MAME for games like Night Driver or Circus?
USB Adaptors are availble to connect these to the PC and I managed to get the Atari Paddle Controller pair to work but not the Driving Controllers.

It registers as what? Game Controller? Mouse?

It registers under Game Controllers. Spinning the knob makes the + cursor go up and down. Pressing the button registers as button #1.

maybe it is something to do with what you have set in mame.ini for the below.. you would need to change the related line to joystick ..

I was thinking this also but I tried several of these and couldn't get it to work.
