New MAME release schedule

From http://www.mamedev.org/?p=397:
"Please note that from now on we will create release every last Wednesday in month."
Just curious - what prompted the change?

I'm not sure it was actually discussed...

I liked it better when they spread them out a few months apart

Times have not changed (in this regard). Most people will like the new schedule better, it's just that you can't please everybody and people are more likely to post about something they don't like than something they do.

Well, the thread should probably have been locked after inception. An information, not a discussion, the topic is.
By the way, nifty new site layout and all (mamedev.org). I like it.

Enough with the lock jibber jabber, Yoda. I'm seriously about to add a new rule on the Rules page that says overall we don't give much of a fuck about all the above and mods/admins do whatever they want. Fucking rules, jesus.

Well, with every MAME release I spent at LEAST 3 to 4 days to get the cab back up to scratch (Writing Custom-ini files and such, I really don't like catver.ini) So I'll probably fall behind somewhere, which is my personal issue, I know.
I read everything below my original post, and I agree that MOST people will like the new MAME each month, just will be a PITA for me. And yes, I tend to post more when I disagree :P

This may sound like a crazy, never though of and mind blowing idea but, how about updating every two or three official releases?

The only thing I might have to do is add roms.....I don't understand why you'd do anything else....

well, we (the team) need people to test our changes and report problems at a regular pace since the userbase waiting for official releases is much wider than the one following github progress it is vital for the project to have new releases regularly
if this really creates problems at your end, please just skip the releases that you feel uncomfortable with (if the games you care about all work fine, you probably don't need to update at each release)

Many user groups, like ti99 or Coco programmers, only update every few releases and if e.g. the change to a clock chip or to a video chip add on only presents bug with a very specific config of emulated hardware it is easier to catch the problem when you have hundreds of testers than with a dozen only
It sounds like common sense to me

It actually does, and with that in mind I can understand perfectly well why. Thanks.

The biggest thing I brought away from the change is that, for the first time in a long time, we have a set time to 'expect' a release. For the last couple years, releases haven't been regular by any means or on any dependable schedule. With reliability/certainly of a schedule, you garner more people looking forward and/or getting excited about an upcoming release and knowing when it comes also allows those people to be able to prepare for a release if they so choose.
In the end, I think it is better for the project and I doubt quality in that actual releases will suffer in this transition.

Will the monthly releases be full version releases (0156 to 0157 for example) or update releases (.0156u1)? I'm assuming it depends, so both will happen. But, I was curious because I could see the rom/chd traffic go crazy if people are trying to get full sets every month.
Anywhooo, just curious.

AFAIK, all releases will be integer only releases.

Plus it's only monthly. And ain't like it can't be changed....
