They put so much effort and concepts in the first movie that we often get an empty shell in the second (aka money grab).
Hopefully there are exceptions like T2 or Aliens

In the extras I have for the movie, Paul Verhoeven said more or less that he envisioned the narrative as the second coming of Jesus. I can't see anything about that in the movie, I just repeat what he said.
Maybe Irvin "ESB" Kershner though of coming up with more biblical themes and set it as David vs. Goliath, or some kind of evolutionary discussion about complexity vs. raw strength, or who knows what. I also see it's intriguin it's the last feature film directed by him.
Robocop 2 is cheesy but enjoyable, although I think the villains in the first movie are far superior and more intriguing. Robocop 3 is just crap IMHO.

i don't think the first one is cheesy. certainly, viewed today, the overall sentiment is dated, but it's a pretty dark film in my opinion. the sequels were cash grabs.

But is it as bad as Highlander 2? I've watched the first one a hundred times (though it took me a while to find a copy where the vocal audio wasn't drowned out by the sound effects and music)....the second one though...I walked out of the theater for the first time when I went to see it.

Not many movies are as bad as Highlander 2. You gotta go low like Superman IV, Battlefield Earth Lawnmower Man 2 or Son Of The Mask and similar. Robocop 2 is entertaining although it has too many high and lows. While too irregular, I still have it to watch it from time to time, although Robocop will get more use plus it has interesting extras. Stay off Robocrap 3 tho. And I haven't seen any of the japanese unofficial sequels, korean remakes with women, tv series or anything.

I agree, but watching 2 and 3 it's sort of like they watched the first one and tried to concentrate on what could possibly be construed as cheese like I'll buy that for a dollar or running rope around the legs of a robot, decided that was the cash cow to milk, and then just concentrated on making the sequels as cheese as possible. Even Robocop's walk got corny in the sequels, it's really amazingly terrible film and really makes me wonder what they were thinking, as far as how they were to satisfy the audience.

Robocop 1 was a very anti-commercialism, anti-big corporation movie. It showed just how bad things could get if you let corporate overlords take over a city in their own way. Regardless of its theme, it became very popular...
And so, toys, comics, and two cartoon series were created.
Frank "Goddamn Batman" Miller wrote the original Robocop 2 treatment, which was declared unfilmable, and it was heavily rewritten and sanitized with a hammer into the Robocop 2 we know today.
I will say this... if you think the Robocop 2 film was cheesy, or bad, and you just don't like it, it could've been much worse. Frank Miller's script was adapted into a nine issue comic book by Avatar Press in 2006, and my god it is an ABOMINATION. IT MAKES ROBOCOP 3 LOOK GREAT IN COMPARISON.

It's all a matter of cheese.
Robocop was filmed in 1987, when cheese prices were high.
Between 1987 and 1990, new technologies allowed massive cheese production, which cheapened cheese so producers could afford much more cheese for the sequel.
Cheese is the key.
