Galaxian - emulated sound correct?
#334064 - 10/31/14 07:59 PM

I've always wondered whether the MAME Galaxian sound is correct compared to an original. To me, the background 'hum' just sounds way too loud - drowning out the in-game sounds. Logically, I'd have thought Namco wouldn't have wanted to detract from the in-game sounds, so mine just seems to sound 'correct'.
So I've made a (poor) video of my Galaxian game simply to indicate the sound that mine makes - whether that be correct or incorrect. Hunting around on YouTube does seem to show some variation with the sounds and things like the Namco Collection for the PS1 are clearly not correct either (the hum just gets faster and faster which I'm sure is wrong). So even Namco can't be trusted!

If anyone has access to an original and can confirm either way, that would be nice to know. Link below:

"Hey guys, I don't trust the audio of this driver which has more than likely been measured from an actual cabinet, here's a hacked-up version to suit my flaky memory, why isn't MAME like my hacked-up version?"

Hey, settle down. Gary's is (if what he says is true) from a PCB as well, it's not like he was using a hacked-up version of MAME or something as a source. It's just from a bootleg board that is running Galaxian ROMs. At least one of the bootlegs should match.

MooglyGuy,

Surely the aim of emulation is to get the games as accurate as possible, yes? If we think there is a problem, then it is up to us to highlight potential issues so they can be resolved.

If you had taken the time to read the notes I put on the video IT WAS TO CONFIRM whether I am correct. I think I am but I may not be. Fair enough. That is why I asked if anyone had gotten access to an original to check it out based on my observations. Is that so bad?

As I have said, the PCB I have used is a chip-for-chip replacement with the original. The sound on these older games are discrete - not using a sound chip - so both boards should (and do, from memory) produce the same sounds. All of the other sounds are correct. It is just the background hum that is wrong, I think.

I don't think what I am asking is really so horrendous. I just want this classic game to be as perfect as possible.

A final note. I did a lot of side-by-side tests in the past highlighting various issues since I have access to some of the actual PCB's. I have highlighted errors that no one would have noticed had I, and others like me, not spent the time to compare both versions, so that people like you can enjoy perfect renditions.

I think this is a common issue recently. DK Jr's 'running' sound is similar (though that's Nintendo), and I was able to turn that down via ch. 0 discrete sound in the tab menu. Alas, Galaxian has all sounds on one channel.
