Sounded fuckin old in the late 80s. Ewww. The reason it was so popular is because millions of drunks heard it, and since the vocalist sounds drunk, they auto-identified.

A lot of music in the 70s sounded old because they had crappy recording and mixing...and because they were throwbacks from the late 60s.

Why then do most recordings from the 70's - 80's sound better than the shit "music" released today? The sound quality is atrocious on most current stuff.

Well, you know the answer to that, don't you?
Equipment was less able to reproduce the exact performance in the past. Anyone with a lick of sense can listen past that. Today they don't know how to use the equipment properly because they're a bunch'a "louder is better" hacks looking to cash in, and don't give two shits about quality, art, purpose, or meaning.

Because you get about 3-4 bits of dynamic range out of the 16 that CD has on current music. In arcade terms, this means you're buying albums with the same sound quality as the punch sounds in Street Fighter II. I am... not a fan. Foo Fighters' "The Colour and the Shape" from 1997 was the last major rock album where they actually tried to make it sound good.

I love your arcade game analogy. Yes as mentioned before this loudness war shit has pretty well stopped me from buying music. That and my cabinet is full. I do like having a physical copy and not just a download.

I don't mind downloads, but the loudness war crap has definitely shifted my listening preferences. Live bootlegs often have better sound than official studio albums, for instance.

I don't know what music you're talking about, or what you think sounds good. I prefer very streamlined and very un-live sounding environments. Besides, only in Art Music where there is actual timbral complexity and true dynamics does it really matter.
