how to enable Second joystick in MAME

Hello,

I am building a MAME cabinet used for 2 players.
The games works perfectly with the 1 player joystick, but it does seems for me impossible to get the second joystick to work. If i go to the interface setup to choose the buttons for second player, it somehow is not recognized. The joysticks i use is a common USB joystick interface with connectors for buttons and joystick. Both controllers are recognized by the operating system. Is there somehow a option to enable second controller, or does mame detect it by itself.

Infact, the problem was a defect joystick (newly bought)
Replaced it and all works well.
