Is possible pass the 1st stage from level 22 (the kill screen), with the "suicide jump glitch", this add a bit score

Donkey Kong is a great game and a classic. That is undisputed. However I have a genuine question to you all...

Why doesn't Pac-man or Ms Pac-man ever get the kind of competitive love that DK does? Pac-man/Ms Pac are arguably more popular than Donkey Kong(and some would say a more challenging and enjoyable game overall), and yet the gaming masses are always competing on DK. Why? I don't mind watching players go at it in DK, but I could sit and watch people compete at a high level on Ms Pac-man all day.

Pac-Man has a known maximum score of 3,333,360 points before you get to the kill screen. You can't do better, you can only get there faster. Ms. Pac-Man eventually ends at a similar kill screen but because fruit appears randomly after level 7 (IIRC) getting a better score is based on luck. I don't think Donkey Kong has a known maximum score before getting to the kill screen. I'm no expert on the topic but I'm guessing that has something to do with it.

That would most likely be the precise reason. Dean Saglio has a 1.2 Million on Mame [http://replay.marpirc.net/r/dkong] and there's no reason to presume that to be the absolute best.

There's just too much randomness with fireballs and wild barrels to be able to figure a definitive highest score.

Ms. Pac-Man is just absolutely ruthless though, as you never know how many extra screens you will get and it also comes down to pure randomness of fruit development later on. [What you want a Banana every time? How 'bout a Cherry instead and I'll keep the extra points?] It can take a killer game with all possible extra screens and make your score less then if someone really lucked out but had no extra screens.

One would presume it should have an even bigger following alone for that challenge... but I'd have to believe KOK: A Fistful of Quarters is why DK became such a hot game to run and spawned such a huge event every year [The Kong Off].

NOW!!! If there was a specialized ROMSet that specifically fixed the KS issue [I know someone had showed how to fix the code a long time ago... can't recall the name off hand] and it was run at an event, there might be SOME who would go for that alone to see how far they could marathon DK, but there would always be competition on a KS set because there will always be a desire to see how high it can go with the limitation.

Don Hodges posted the fix: http://www.donhodges.com/how_high_can_you_get.htm

Personally, I think a marathon DK would be a much less popular record to go for. The appeal of DK is that there is no fixed maximum score, but the kill screen limits any game to a manageable length. It's easy to try for a record because, win or lose, you're done in a few hours. Going for a marathon record means investing 72+ hours in some cases, which is automatically going to appeal to a smaller audience. Marathon games are interesting, but they're as much about the ability to endure boredom, discomfort, and sleep deprivation, as they are about being skilled at playing the game.

Yup. I love watching speedruns of games, but a lot of e.g. JRPGs have world records in the 4+ hour range and not a lot of people will sit around for that.

DK is a more interesting game. Then there's the kill screen factor.

From the second link, down the page, the 'didn't quites':

Finally, just two weeks ago during the Donkey Kong Online Open #4, MAME champion Dean Saglio found his way to a machine at Richie Knucklez' arcade in New Jersey when, approaching the end of a run that was on pace to break the record (and with Chien himself only a few feet away on an adjacent machine) the game reset:

The rumored Hank Chien "force field" never seemed more intimidating than after this horrifying incident, but evidently, this burst of electromagnetic interference was its last, glorious gasp.

I'm skeptical of this. I've NEver heard of a DK machine just RE-setting. Anyways, at that score 3200 seems a bit above the rest. I bet it's beatable, but I don't know as it will be done....unless Hank has something up his sleeve.

Also, I didn't know Chien's score had remained. I thought Billy had a score coming a couple years ago. But I guess it didn't materialize. So I'd guess he's out of it.

Machines can and do reset themselves, it's called "watchdogging". In general if a machine does that the operator should pull it out of service until the cause is tracked down.

Don't tell me the machine has gone "Turbo?"
