I'll try to catch up this weekend. Crazy week here. Need some Minecraft far-roaming time.
BTW, nice giant tree over by the village Tfin. Just like Yosemite.

I'd like to detail the leaves a bit, but working up there is such a hassle.
Tip: view distance can be set to 32 chunks now, if your PC can handle it (RAM), but the standard server default is 9 (I think), so set it to 11 for a bit of fog at the edges.
If you see something like this, run (boat) far away, quickly. Just "nope" all over it for now:

WTF is that? I had read about ocean monuments in the update notes, and also something about endermites (that last sounds ghastly).

It's an Ocean Monument. They're generated structures consisting of three types of new, 1.8-specific blocks: Prismarine, Prismarine Bricks, Dark Prismarine, and Sea Lanterns. There is also a chance that a monument will have a room with wet sponge blocks in it, which can be dried in a furnace to get a dry sponge block, and each monument has eight gold blocks at its center.
They contain two new types of hostile mobs: Guardians and Elder Guardians. They both have a ranged beam attack, and elder guardians will also cause the Mining Fatigue debuff, where you mine slower. Guardians will drop Prismarine Crystals and Prismarine Shards, which can be used to craft the four types of new blocks that comprise the new monuments.
