Virus help

I'm running Windows Vista on one of my computers. Every ten minutes or so a dialogue box pops up saying szywpryc.exe has stopped working and will close. Then there will be a different crazy named exe come up that Windows wants to close.
I checked the task manager, nothing seems out of the ordinary. I run a MacAfee scan (yes it's updated) and it finds nothing. I tried Hijack this and I don't see anything that stands out (although I'm no expert at all).
I cannot locate the exe files that close anywhere on the PC doing a search.
Any help is appreciated.

Combofix is a great first-line eradication tool. Worth a try.

Note: This program does not work on Windows 8.1 at this time!
Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Another option if he using Windows 8.1.

Use Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and after you've removed that annoying malware, ditch MacAfee. I'm sure people here can recommend some better software than that.

It sounds more like spyware than a virus or a rootkit. Besides what people have already suggested, you might want to try Spybot S&D (there's a free version which works great).
As far as antivirus goes, McAffee was great when I was using DOS. Now I'd recommend Avast! as the free version is very complete, and in my experience works better than the now-bloatware AVG.

Once you get it fixed also set yourself up a less privileged user. That breaks about 99% of viri installs. As they do not have the privileges to write where they need to. Also get something like adblock and noscript. That is where many of them come from these days in drive by attacks.
Its really easy just create a normal user in the control panel. Then only use the admin user for installs or maintenance. It is the same thing as 'dont run as root' in the linux world. Now... if I would just follow my own advice

The relatively few of us who want to mess (or more) with things most shouldn't, it's more hassle to be switching accounts when one wants/needs to. Besides, when are you going to switch to Admin, after you disconnect your Enet/turn off your wireless?

Ditto - except for Superantispyware cos I don't know that one. Mbytes seems pretty fuckin kick ass.
As for AV, I've been through all of the majors - Norton on my first computer, then AVG for a few years, then Avast - but I've been on MSE for the longest now. Just too easy and, contradictorily, little resource use, perhaps the least of any of them.

I use the button on my laptop to turn wireless off if I need to. Most of the time it is connected and automatically. Have not seen one recently that did not have a switch.
It has already saved me a world of headache on my wife's computer and on my fathers computer and on my mother in laws computer and on my wifes uncles computer and her grandparents computers...
Yes it is a *bit* of a hassle. But so is reinstalling a computer or spending 12 hours scanning one to make sure none of the 4 different viri scanners dont find anything else.
Switch user is pretty cool (2 users logged in at the same time). Also you can set it to prompt you up to admin user for many things. Which is what I do if I need to noodle around with my wifes computer.
When I did this a few years ago on my other computer if I was in a tinker mood I would log in as my admin user. When not in a tinker mood I would log in normal. Just need to set it up again. It was pretty cool too as I could screw the user up and if I didnt like it anymore I could delete the user and just start over. Though these days I use virtual machines for that...

When something tries to install into program files, program files (x86), system32, and a couple of other places, Windows should tell you that you need administator's permission for that (as a regular user). A window pops up and you can just type the user name and password of your admin account. You rarely have to actually switch users.
if you do... both Win 7 and 8 have fast user switching: windows key+L

all of those programs have strengths and weaknesses. SB S&D+Superantispyware+MBAM+hijackthis (for a manual look) all run in a row will each detect (and *usually* fix) different things when run right after the other on a really messed up system. I've fixed many a machine using that combo.
when something can't be auto-fixed, it at least tells me what/where something is so I can jump in with a PE, or unlocker (if I'm lucky)
