Here's a question for you guys....what are your top 10 favorite (MAME supported) side-scrolling/belt scrolling beat em up brawlers of all time? There's only one rule.....They MUST work in MAME
Here's mine *currently* but it could change at any time:
1)Final Fight 2)Street of Rage 2 Megatouch 3)Vigilante 4)Armored Warriors 5)Metamorphic Force 6)Sengoku 3 7)The CombatTribes Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow Over Mystaria 9)Dragon's Crown 10)Ninja Baseball Batman

- Asterix
- Big Fight - Big Trouble In The Atlantic Ocean
- Captain America and The Avengers
- Double Dragon
- Final Fight
- Ninja Baseball Bat Man
- Ninja Clowns
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Turtles in Time

Nice list^^
Ninja Clowns, Asterix and Big Fight are games that I was completely unaware of, so thanks
I've played The Simpsons once, but for some reason I'm not a fan of Konami's graphical style during that era(Simpsons, TMNT, etc). Way too cartoony imho.

So, it has to work in MAME, but you list Dragon's Crown, which is a Vita/PS3 only game?
Guardian Heroes sort of works in MESS, and it's objectively the best beat 'em up ever made. Nothing else is really even close from a gameplay perspective.

I can't say I have an extensive list of Beat'em ups that I've played. But, from what I can recall (and maybe some don't qualify(?)) - it would be these...
Final Fight Shadow Force Golden Axe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Dynasty Warriors Warrior Blade Ninja Gaiden (this one I actually hate, but I've played it so it goes in the list)
I'm not sure if Bad Dudes would qualify or not since it's a 2D side-scroller (no isometric plane).
So that's about all the beat'em ups I've played. I told ya it wasn't extensive enough.
If I were to add anything else it would have to be on a console or PC.
Well, technically, the TMNT I played on my cousin's SNES. But I'm sure that's arcade accurate.

Honestly, the arcade version of Double Dragon hasn't aged well. I was never a huge fan, but compared to other things that came later, it feels very twitchy and not in a good way. Double Dragon on the NES has held up way better, and is more fun to play IMO.

I was going by happy memories, sometimes from when the games came out. I don't ever play button mashers these days. Maybe once a year. If I was going to do a how they held up to time list I'd have to revisit everything.

I think I was soured on it by my first experience. I was 9 when the arcade version came out, and all I remember is long lines and crowds around the machine. 9-year-old me had no chance of making it through the crowd to get a chance to play. It was probably a couple of years before I had the chance to play the arcade version, and I remember being pretty unimpressed.

Yeah, but the Simpsons and TMNT (and Bucky O'Hare) were adaptations of cartoons. And they each did a decent job at cribbing the style of the source cartoons, none of which were all that similar to each other. (I mean, can you imagine how Matt Groening would draw April from TMNT?)

You're not wrong. DD1/2 and Rygar are among the games where the NES port played better than the arcade.

Undercover Cops would also be in my top 10. I was very disappointed when the SNES port was never released in the US.

That's a bizarre coincidence, I just happened to play that game for the first time literally yesterday. It was... OK. Not sure I'd call it a hidden gem, though.

WOW....I'm really digging The Gladiator. It's rocking so far! Looks like I completely missed the boat on all the IGS beat em ups they put out during the 2000s. I wonder which one has the most "RPG" elements? Seems like they got their inspiration from Dungeon Fighter Online and other Korean MMOs.
And I have to say guys....I'm honestly SHOCKED none of you mentioned either Aliens vs Predator or The Sunset Riders. Thought those two were popular among MAME heads.

I absolutely love Sunset Riders, but it's a run-and-gun, not a beat-em-up. Also, one beat-em-up I forgot to mention is Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (the System 18 version) - it's great.

Yup, because it's so intensely weird. But the FM versions of the MJ music are pretty good, and it plays well.
Konami's Violent Storm gets a similar WTF nod, especially since the music has vocals.

> You're not wrong. DD1/2 and Rygar are among the games where the NES port played better than the arcade.
Double Dragon just had the hardware slow-down issue. DD2 didn't have that, and there were more and cooler moves (because ultimately the elbow move, lackluster though it was, in DD was the only decent move). I don't recall anything being wrong with it.
Still, Double Dragon was fun enough. I was in high school when it was released, and I had not been keeping up with video games, so it was my first experience with the type.
((I mean, I was imagining translucent images in a transparent screen (the windshield of my Matchbox '70 crimson red, white-top Challenger) at perhaps nine or ten - this was before Star Trek II, even - so arcade games only somewhat got my attention. I wanted 3D back then. Ironic my current sentiments about that, and 2D games, respectively.))
Rygar was just a crappy game. Black Tiger was the mature version of the period, and rightly so, it was a Capcom game.

How can you enjoy The Punisher and not Alien vs. Predator? It's basically the same game only better.
I guess I'm the only one who thinks that the first Golden Axe is a butt log. The art's hideous, and the characters move like they're wading through mud. The only thing I like about it is the fact that you can dash. Golden Axe 2 on System 32 is really the only decent GA game, in my opinion. It plays so much better. They basically fixed everything wrong with the first one.
Really, though, when you consider that Golden Axe and Final Fight came out in the same year, it's almost embarrassing for Sega. Final Fight looks like it's a generation ahead, and it plays a generation ahead. Final Fight really is a masterpiece. It was basically the first beat 'em up to have really good precision control.

The key to enjoying the arcade Double Dragon is discovering the reverse elbow move. It's so overpowered that the game is actually pretty fun to play when you just go around and elbow everyone to the facee. The collision detection on it is hilarious. It's almost hard to use it and not hit someone.

Press both buttons and push the opposite direction, I think.
@bigbluefe: yeah, but it's not flashy, and it gets old after a while. Elbow, move, elbow, move.....ad nauseum.

I gotta agree with Kerblunk here. GA2: RODA plays a lot better than the original, and the art/music are superior as well.
The part where they then got the nearly unlimited 2D power of ST-V, greenlit a new Golden Axe for it, and made a poor SF2-style fighter is a good proxy for everything Sega did wrong in the 90s.

Rastan's great, but the slightly stiff control always put me off a bit. Great art style and one of Zuntata's best 80s soundtracks though.

I was playing Rastan III yesterday and it's a much better game than the first 2 IMO. They're all pretty decent but they're no Shadow over Mysteria or anything.
I've been enjoying Knights of Valour quite a bit. Man...where the hell did IGS come from? They're like the only Chinese company that made these type of arcade games.

Rastan isn't a beat 'em-up, it's a side-scroller, in the same vein as Rygar.
I've over years warmed to the game, and play it occasionally. The sound level of the game music is a little odd, because the game is so quiet in space.

Rastan isn't a beat 'em-up, it's a side-scroller, in the same vein as Rygar.
I agree, but since other people in this thread have been including games that technically aren't beatem ups, I figure it was close enough.
By the way, you guys should try the Sega Master System port of Rastan. It's one of the best arcade ports in my opinion.

I think Arby was just mentioning related Sega games.

Mmmm. No. The PC port is the best/closest. And I have the SMS version. *I can say that since I recall all the way back then, but couldn't afford a computer*
Looks very good! Except I hate games that give you 1/3rd of the screen ahead of the character.
*looks at more videos before adding reply*
Ooh! Look at this'n!
Even though it's a bit quirky, I love how fast it moves.
Edit: I'll amend my previous statement. ^That version is the best.

I don't like that fast movement. Not at all. Way too fast. It almost looks like the Throttle is enabled... that's how weirdly fast it is. (I know it's not enabled)

So only Smitdogg, hap and myself are Streets of Rage fans? Shame on you guys
I got into Streets of Rage Remake for PC earlier this year and got hooked. Unfortunately I can't be bothered with it because although the port is fantastic, the display options SUCK. Even at 640x480 it scales so poorly, especially when running in a window. No option to run in a window at 1920x1080. Fullscreen is pretty much your only decent option.
So....with that having been said, MAMEDEVS please please please PLEEEEEEEEEASE see if you can find a way to convert Streets of Rage Remake into "arcade code" to run in MAME somehow. That would be absolutely awesome!

I've got mad love for SoR 1 and 2 but including them in the list seemed like a bit of a cop-out > So....with that having been said, MAMEDEVS please please please PLEEEEEEEEEASE see if > you can find a way to convert Streets of Rage Remake into "arcade code" to run in > MAME somehow. > Um, sidescrolling beat em ups breh
Tekken Force is a horribly coded game (Tekken 3 on PlayStation 1).
* 2D side-scroller with 3D movement complete with a scoring system and a numerical ranking system called "force" after completion of the game's four stages (this is not a minus at all) * Randomly changing axis depending on what part of the screen the opponent is (picture an invisible straight line between you and your closest opponent, then another opponent suddenly gets closer than the first opponent, which causes your axis to shift towards this opponent in order for your character to fight them while losing focus of the other opponent entirely (who continues to attack you), then the first opponent moves closer again, your axis changes again, ad infinitum) * Double-teaming CPU enemies (in front and from behind) who make your character not know which way they are standing (e.g. forward or backwards) due to the above axis changes, causing your character to perform reverse turning kicks/punches towards the closest person instead of normal frontal-based attacks due to a character behind you suddenly being closer than the character you're currently fighting in front of you * CPU hides off the right hand edge of the screen more often than not, leaving them untouchable (the stage only scrolls when all enemies nearby are defeated) * The end of each stage has a large inaccessible zone where your character can't move (as above); naturally, the CPU boss (a normal Tekken opponent) can, and does, hide in that area while wasting the precious little time you have to complete the stage
Tekken 4's version of Tekken Force is a much better game, but is in a full third person 3D view rather than being a 2D style game (as is Devil Within in Tekken 5, although the only character selectable in Jin, and has a unique, limited moveset just for this game).

WOW, "Magic Sword: Heroic Fantasy" is turning out to be a better Rastan clone than Rastan itself! Pretty cool game so far.

Well.....it's more like a sequel to Black Tiger, and while killer graphics, not great game play. Rastan is actually a neater game in that respect.

It's a little late for something that went already off-topic, but I'll only leave this here anyway.

Isn't that a beat 'em-up, though? I didn't like it at all, made me think of Golden Axe in game play and all. But it is in context.

I was about to say the same thing regarding Aliens vs Predator.
Everybody and his mother loves that particular game. That Lin Kurosawa chick to this day is one of Capcom's most popular characters, so much so that many Capcom fans have tried to get her into all those Marvel vs Capcom fighters since the mid 1990s.
Unfortunately, obvious legal and licensing problems (a/k/a 21st Century Fox) would never allow it without substantial royalties being paid to them.

what does Lin Kurosawa have to do with 21 Century Fox? That name has never been used in any of their IPs. They'd have a problem with "Ripley" on the other hand.

I just remember reading that somewhere. That's all.
