How do I turn off mame random list generator
#329493 - 08/07/14 10:14 PM

Just really needing help to get the random list generator turned off. Id like to be able to scroll through my list alphabetically...Also on a side note I cant make mame open all games windowed. I can only get individual games windowed, quite bothersome. Thx -drachenzor

The built-in game list is deliberately obtuse in that way to steer you towards one of the many fine front ends out there if you don't/can't use the command line and batch files to get what you want.

As far as the second request, you want it to open all the games at once in windows? For someone with all the ROMs, that would be over 10,000 windows - kind of like the "eliminate the porn virus" minigame in GTA V on some massive steroids.

I'd have to check when I get home, but I don't think the default UI lists all the games anyway or at least it doesn't seem to list certain ones. For example, when in the Mame UI, if I type XMEN, I only see the 4-player version. The 6-player version doesn't even show up. But, if I launch the command line passing it the 6-player rom name it works just fine. I'm not sure if that is expected or not or if I'm remembering incorrectly how it works?

Quoting my own reply below: "The built-in game list is deliberately obtuse in that way to steer you towards one of the many fine front ends out there if you don't/can't use the command line and batch files to get what you want."

Are you saying it's deliberately so obtuse that it won't even show the name of the game if you type it into the UI? If so, I don't think obtuse is the right word.

The Internal game picker UI is 'dumb' in that it only lists what is available/found as far as folders or .zip/.7z files are concerned. It doesn't check the contents of said folders (compressed or not) so it is essentially a failsafe to show something when the binary is double clicked. Imagine not too many years ago there was NO picker mechanism and double clicking simply popped up a console window for a moment and disappeared just as quickly.... how confusing!

That said, there are many front-ends which will achieve your goal. There are various UI flavors which include the emulator itself (MAMEUI, UIFX, MEWUI) and others which you can provide your binary (QMC2, IV/Play, Emuloader) as well as many high end front-ends like Hyperspin and GameEX which in the end are not free.

That's fine and all. I'm certainly not worried about the mame ui as I use a front-end. Nor do a really care about discussing how it works or why it works the way it does. But, you said it'll show games that you have individual zips for. Apparently, it doesn't even do that in the case of Xmen. As I have individual zip files for all the different versions and only the 4-player version shows in the UI. It can just a be a bit confusing to people which is understandable.

There might be too many hits (it only shows the first 15 matches) when you type just "xmen". Try typing the whole set "xmen6p" or "xmen6pu" .. I'm able to see them just fine.

I'd guess the parent set is what's being picked. Of course any others will appear if specifically requested. Sheesh.

I mean, the intenal UI list is a cool thing, especially when checking some thing/troubleshooting, etc, but not knowing how an exe basically works/what it is is inexcusable.

Apparently the version I was messing with, 0152 in this case, is pointing at a rom set that doesn't have the individual rom zips. If I point to a different set of roms that has each one individually, then it works as you described. I guess I never really noticed that the 0152 set I have didn't have them all as individual zips.

Haha no I don't want to open all games at once, I just want the emu to Always open windowed? ... so I can't make mame just list my games in order that I can scroll down like older previous versions of mame? :/

Open mame.ini with notepad and find:

#
# OSD VIDEO OPTIONS
#
video d3d
numscreens 1
window 0

Change "window" to 1. Note that any gamename.ini in the ini folder with window set to 0 will override this.

You are confusing MAME with MameUI: http://www.mameui.info/

I thought mameui was discontinued & only have a 64bit beta version... I have 32bit or whatever so it didn't work for me when I tried it. So I was hoping to just change my current Mame lol. My whole reason for this is because I'm trying to play through every single game & delete all the junk I don't want but 8000 Roms is a lot so an alphabetical list & windowed mode would speed this up lol catch my drift :P

yeah, one of the limitations of the internal UI is that merged sets are not picked up individually

Mame32 was renamed to MameUI when John IV started offering both 32- and 64-bit versions. Later, the 32-bit version was discontinued.

If you plow through the News Submission board here you'll find 32-bit versions of MameUI attached or linked in every release topic.
